How to get from Philadelphia airport to New York?

How would i get from New York (Manhattan) to Philadelphia?

  • I'm flying to JFK (from the UK) for a weeks holiday in NY but after that i need to get to Philadelphia as i'm studying at Penn State for the autumn semester. My boyfriends heading back to the UK from LGA (L'Guardia or something like that) airport at 5pm so it would be great if you know of any ways to get from the airport to Phil, is that possible? If not we're staying by central park. I've heard of Penn Station, would i go there to get a train to Phil? Yea i just have no idea how to get to and from so any advise would be really great! Also we have to check out the hotel a few hours before leaving NY so any idea's on what we could do then about suitcases. Maybe go to central park for a while (a 10 min walk) and sit there with them, is that safe to do?? Can't think of any other option.

Usually hotels will let you leave your bags in a storage room after you check out until you are ready to go to the train. Yes, Central Park is very safe. Yes, you go to Penn Station. Just take a cab to get there. from Central Park it won't cost too much. You can either take Amtrak directly to Philadelphia(it's expensive, especially the Acela train) or New Jersey Transit to Trenton. At Trenton you change trains to Philadelphia. Get on the R7. You usually can just follow the crowd because lots of people will be going there. If you have a lot of luggage it might be worth paying for Amtrak because lugging it from train to train is a pain in the neck. No matter what train you take you will end up in Philadelphia's 30th Street station. You can get a cab from there to anywhere, but make sure you know where you are going. I hope you know that Penn State (The Pennsylvania State University) is not in Philadelphia. It is in State College, PA, which is in the middle of Pennsylvania. It would not make sense to go to Philadelphia from New York if you are heading to Penn State. The University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is in West Philadelphia. Please be sure you know where you are going! (It's LaGuardia Airport.) Good luck.

Great answer from the previous poster, but I'll clarify one item and add some others. Penn State DOES have a campus near Philadelphia, but they do not offer any housing, so I doubt that's it. Another cheap option from NYC (this does not mean I recommend it) is the Bolt Bus. http://www.boltbus.com. It's getting decent reviews but is longer and difficult with luggage. I only include it because I know students have a limited budget sometimes. Fares one way are between $7 and $12. As far as LGA to Penn, you can take a cab (about $20) or there are a selection of train lines. If you are not familiar with the NYC transit systems, you might be better off with staying in the city and having your BF take a cab to the airport when he goes. Any hotel in NYC will store the luggage for you, just ask at the front or bell desk. Remember to tip the people who store AND retrieve your luggage ($1-$2 per bag).

I agree with the other posters about the train to Philly. However, if you are going to Penn State (and not U of Penn), it would make sense to take a bus from NYC to State College/ University Park, PA. If you are going to Penn State, and not Penn, I would make sure which campus you are going to. There are a few near Philadelphia, and more than 20 all over the state. Edit: Since you are going to PSU, check out Greyhound or a commuter flight. Unfortunately you will have a connection flight as direct flights are only between Cincinnati, Detroit, Philadelphia and Washington/Dulles for the University Park Airport. Flying will take you a ridiculously long time and probably be expensive. The good thing is the flight between DC/NYC or Philly/NY is 40 minutes. And the flight between Philly/University Park is about 40 minutes. There are no trains to University Park/State College, so a bus would be your best bet. It's right off of 80, so you can probably find a few options with Grayhound and it should take you 4-5 hours. Also, call the office for forgein students. They may be able to help you get to campus. Most students who dont have a car, take the bus.
