What is the best way to get around Philadelphia?
-
I'm staying at the Marriott West Philadelphia on 111 Crawford Ave. What is the best/cheapest way to get to Philadelphia City Center? Also how bad is the traffic in Philadelphia? I would like to go to the 30th street station and go to NYC for a day. What would be the best way to get there? Thanks.

Answer:
The hotel isn't in Philadelphia. It's in West Conshohocken. First you'll need to take a 15 minute walk over the Schuylkill to Conshohocken (get the walking directions from the concierge). You'll go to the Conshohocken Train Station, and get on the R6 train into Center City. You can get any mass transit at septa.org. Driving is okay as long as not it's rush hour. Rush hour on the Schuylkill Expressway is a nightmare. It's jokingly referred to as the Schuylkill Parking Lot. From Center City, you can either take Amtrak directly to New York. Or you would take the R7 train to Trenton and switch over to a NJ Transit train into New York (which is cheaper). If you're going to drive, drive north on 476 to 276 east into NJ. Take NJ Turnpike north to the exit for the Garden State Parkway. Take the Garden State Parkway north to the exit for Metropark. Park at the Metropark train station and take the train into New York. Parking in New York is expensive and the traffic to get into the city is ridiculous.

Hmm. Looks like you're not staying in West Philly. I'd suggest switching if you can. There is a Sheraton in University City (near Penn and Drexel). Its walking distance (10 minutes) from 30th St Station. 30th St station is easy to reach by from the 'burbs. You need to get to a commuter rail station. Looks like the hotel is just across the bridge from the Conshohocken station. You can take the Norristown R6 into 30th Street. I suggest taking the Megabus or the Bolt bus from 30th Street into NYC. You can get great rates and the drop you at Penn Station NYC, just like the train.

Take Septa but that isn't cheap but that is cheaper than anything else. The best time to get around in Philly is early in the morning like 5am-6am or at 2pm or 9pm-whatever
