Things to do in Philadelphia for a few hours?
-
I'll be driving through Philadelphia this weekend, and am thinking about stopping there for a few hours (from around 3PM-6 or 7PM). Where are some good areas to walk around? Will anything be going on there on Friday or Saturday? What are some great restaurants? Thanks a lot

Answer:
if you're driving thru with only a 4hr stopover tops, you want something relaxing, not some triathlon rat race...friday will have rush hour traffic to contend with, saturday traffic will be lighter at that time. if friday is the date, then drive thru south philly towards center city....go down any of the streets heading east, as you get nearer to city hall...perhaps find a good parking spot on spruce, pine, locust or catherine or christian... walk down south st , heading east..this takes you toward the waterfont area. south street, from around 9th to 2nd, has loads of small shops and small cafes, some with outdoor seating.. if the weather is good that day, the walk should refresh you..you can either public pay park down near the waterfront area, or try to find a meter along the streets running east bound towards the waterfront..but parking will be a big concern...cruising down the quiet tree lined streets heading east can be refreshing too..the closer to cc/ city hall the better, like pine, spruce, locust, etc.and south... if it's saturday, afternoon, try driving along east or west river drive...go up and down the parkway and circle in front of the art museum, after circling in front of the museum, back down the parkway just past the library and franklin institute, you'll find outdoor dining , or just meander your way through center city with the flow of traffic..open door and outdoor cafes abound in good weather.and parking may be available in the streets in the high teens..16th street thru 19th streets.

Go to the zoo or art museum. Just walking around downtown can be fun. Stop at the Comcast building (it's the biggest one in the city, you cant' miss it). It's interesting and there are good places to eat in side. You want GREAT food, then go to the Four Seasons, the Mishulu, Chart House or, City Tavern, Bookbinders, or Mc Cormick and Schmidt, but ofcourse those places are expensive. Want inexpensive and great - go to Reading Terminal Market. Take a duck tour or carriage ride and visit the historic area. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are interesting and close together. Take your roller blades or bicycles and ride along Kelly drive then stop and watch the rowers on the river. If you are there at 3PM on Friday take a tour of City Hall - it's very very intersting, then go over to see the Masonic Lodge across the street. Look on the Phillies web site and see if there's a game, then get tix on Stub Hub. It's a nice stadium. Lots of stores on Chestnut, Walnut or South Street. Take the ferry across the river and see the acquarium and the battle ship New Jersey. See an artsy movie at the Ritz theater. Hope this gives you some ideas. Philly has a web site, I forget what it is, but you'll find it with a Google search I"m sure.

Noccie gave you a lot of great ideas, but be sure to check the hours of those places first. The zoo and market close pretty early, as well as, I believe, places like Independence Hall. Still, just walking around the waterfront and Old City is very pleasant. Avoid the tourist trap restaurants on the east end of Market Street. My friends' favorite Center City restaurant is Fork. How about a cheesesteak from Jim's at 4th and South? Or vegetarian Chinese at Harmony? I'd also like to suggest going a little further out to Valley Forge. If you get to the visitors' center before they close, you can get info on self-directed radio and cell phone tours. Welcome and have fun.

Just go to Penn's Landing, especially if you're on I-95. Look for the exits for Columbus Blvd. and Delaware Ave., and then look for the hotels near the Ben Franklin Bridge. There are some bars on Delaware Avenue, but you can cross over that and I-95 at Market Street and at South Street, both streets offering all kinds of bars and restaurants. Market Street is Old City at that point, and is closest to the historical aspects of Philly. It should be pretty easy to get back under way from there in Friday traffic as well.
