How easy is it to travel to Downtown Philly area from PHL Airport Area by Public Transportation?
-
I am making an impromptu trip to Philly Saturday, staying overnight. The cheapest hotel prices I have found are in the airport area (4101 Airport Road, etc..). We will be coming in by bus (will let us off at 30th Street Terminal), but will be in Downtown area prior to heading to hotel. How easy it is to get to and from Downtown Philadelphia area to hotels near the airport via Public Transportation? I have seen that there is a rail (RR1?) that goes to the airport, but would it be near the hotels? Please help, all suggestions welcome!

Answer:
The R1 makes several stops at the airport. I know it stops at the airport Marriot, by terminal B. If its not super close, I would think your hotel would have a shuttle to/from the airport terminals. The railroad is definitely your best bet - it takes you right downtown.

I agree with the other answers: Go to Terminal A and then get a hotel shuttle. You want to go into the 30th street train station and look for the ramp that goes up to the "Regional Rail Lines" in one corner of the main waiting room. You can ask inside the station. Landmarks: It's the corner closest to the Travelers Aid booth and there's also a police desk right next to the ramp. Go up to the ticket windows at the end of that corridor and buy a ticket for the R1 to the airport. They run about every 20 minutes and it's about a 15 minute ride to Terminal A, the first airport stop. Fare should only be a few dollars. SEPTA trains run on a zone system and I'm not sure how many zones it is to the airport, but it will probably be about $4.00. Here's the R1 Saturday schedule: http://septa.org/service/sched/r1_sat.html

I think Brittany is right. FWIW...cabs will probably run about $30 to that location, not counting tip, and even though they throw a fit about using credit cards, they have to, so keep that in mind.

Use Septa.org to plan your trips. If you are going to only be one night keep in mind how much you will be spending on transit vs the hotel . the best way to get from center city to the Airport is the train and keep in mind allot of the airport area hotels have free shuttle to the airport and you can take the train from this point. I would recommend not taking any trolleys... NO FUN. GOOD LUCK! HAVE FUN!
