Drive from Philadelphia to New Jersey how to avoid traffic?

  • Hello All, My fiance and I are planning our wedding and we are aiming to get married at the church I grew up going to and that my parents were married at. The church is St. Annes (Lehigh & Memphis) in Philadelphia. Our wedding reception site is located in NJ (Berlin-NJ) its typically a 25 minute drive. As we all know rush house traffic can be killer. (The wedding will be on a FRIDAY -September 17th) I am looking for suggestions for times. What would be a good time to start the ceremony - so that people wont get stuck in traffic to and from. THANKS!

  • Answer:

A mid-September Friday afternoon will be a killer for traffic any time after noon. You are pretty much locked into the 42 Freeway to get out to Berlin, so the best you can do is have your plans allow for traffic delays. If possible, have the reception start at least an hour after the ceremony ends, and have the ceremony in late morning, maybe 11:00 or so. An alternate route might be to suggest that people go over the Ben Franklin and then out the White Horse Pike (route 30) but there are so many traffic lights that way that it will probably be no faster.

The Tacony-Palmyra bridge usually isn't backed up, and I think the toll is cheaper than others too.

Fridays are a horrible day to drive to NJ from Philly. But you're probably looking at an 11am ceremony so people can start to Berlin by 12:30. Many people take off from work early on Fridays to head down the shore so the rush begins early.

Go drive up earlier in the week - like Thursday. That's what I have to do sometimes for conferences. I also travel late at night (2 AM) and never get any traffic. I know this seems like a bad idea, but it alleviates a lot of pain when i'm at the the conference on Friday and everyone else is stuck in traffic.
