Where should I live that's outside Philly but easily accessible to it, in NJ?
-
Help! I want to live in Philadelphia...but since I accepted a job near A.C. it's far! Also I am trying to avoid the bridge tolls and the high prices since commuting will be about $400-$500. So I was thinking a suburb of Philly within NJ bc it's a)closer to work and in between AC and Philly b) it's cheaper c)avoids bridge toll from Philly to NJ. But I want easy access to philly on nights/weekends. Any insight or places to live near transportation like trains/buses to philly? All I heard was Cherry Hill.... Any insight on stops on the Patco line, Lindenwold, Haddonfield etc? I am used to the Subway in NYC where i'm from, don't mind it being too far.

Answer:
Cherry Hill is a pretty nice place. Personally, I would live closer to A.C. and use the trains when I wanted to go into philly it seems that it would be a little cheaper that way. I live in E.H.T and it is a haven for casino employees but then again, so is most of atlantic county. Absecon is about 20 mins from A.C. and they have a train stop along the W.H.P. (white horse pike) regardless of where you decide to live you're most likely going to need a car to get around. Getting around using strictly public transportation is going to be tough.

PATCO ends at Lindenwold, I think. From there you'd have to transfer over to the NJ Transit A.C. Line (some people call it the "Gambler's Express") and ride that to Atlantic City. It runs from there to 30th Street Station in Philly, and shares a lot of the same stops as the PATCO line, including the last one, Cherry Hill and Haddonfield. PATCO Map: http://www.ridepatco.org/stations/routemap.html NJ Transit Map: http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TripPlannerItineraryFrom I know that Egg Harbor Township has become a bedroom community for Atlantic City, and prices around there are reasonable since the boom hit them so hard...there's a lot of inventory. Vineland is another one, but it's not as easy to take a train...it'll be all buses from there. If you're trying to be walking distance from a station, then anywhere along the White Horse Pike on the way to A.C., since that's where most of the A.C. Line stops are. You could also try Collingswood, as that's an up and coming community, young, and it's close to the train. Anywhere else isn't really walking distance. Most of South Jersey is a shining example of suburban sprawl, so you'll need to be driving to most of these stops unless you find something in Cherry Hill (close), Haddonfield (pretty walkable and beautiful, but $$$) or even Camden. Why not just Philly? The route from 30th Street to A.C. is pretty direct and it looks like it's only about 90 minutes long. Even if you end up someplace closer, I'd imagine that any PATCO transfers or finding parking would end up taking you to 90 minutes anyhow, so why not just live in the City? SEPTA runs the Market Frankford Line right into 30th Street, so that opens up everything from "almost" North Philly (Frankford Terminal) to Upper Darby (69th Street and beyond). That includes Fishtown, Northern Liberties, Old City, Rittenhouse, Center City, Chinatown, University City and bits of West Philly (I personally wouldn't venture too far past 40th Street for a home). Even if you live off of the Broad Street Line, that opens up the Art Museum Area, Temple's Campus (eh) and South Philly, although you do have to transfer at City Hall onto the Market Frankford Line. There's also GOT to be some sort of frequent traveler's discount, either from NJ Transit, or maybe your new job will consider reimbursement, or even just sharing the cost of transit. It never hurts to ask, you know?
