Closest Beach to Philadelphia PA?

  • I live in Philadelphia, but want to go to a beach sometime soon. Whats the closest beach near here? Like Jersey Shore or anything closer, preferably nice and kid-friendly. Thanks!

    If you live in the Northeast, it's Belmar. Take the PA Turnpike over to the Jersey Turnpike north to Exit 7A. Head east on 195, which turns into Route 138. Make a left at the end and then a right onto 10th St. and follow to the ocean. If you live in South Philly, it's Atlantic City. Take the Ben Franklin Bridge to the 42 Freeway to the Atlantic City Expressway. Follow to the end.

All the NJ beaches from Atlantic City down. Try Wildwood, its the best I've seen.

Most of the Jersey Shore towns that Philly area people tend to visit are due southeast. Each has its merits. Atlantic City is probably the most well-known due to the casinos but the city is generally struggling along once you get off the boardwalk. Ocean City is a family friendly, "dry" town. Wildwood has a lot of amusement rides, flirty teens and young adults and probably the most "cheesy" shops on the shore. On the southern tip, Cape May is known for its Victorian homes. Ventnor, Long Beach Island and Avalon cater to upscale singles and families. There are other towns popular with North Jersey and NYC people like Belmar Beach, Seaside Heights (a lot like Wildwood) and Sandy Hook but I'd suggest going onto the NJ forums for more info.
