Is Pittsburgh a safe city to move to?
-
My husband is applying to grad schools and the University of Pittsburgh is his top choice. His graduate studies will last for about 6 years, so we'll be there for quite a while and I want to be sure that it's safe for us and our young child. He's going for Immunology, which means late nights working in the lab, many of them may even be complete over night hours where I and my one year old will be alone. I'm very hesitant about this as I've lived in a very, very small town all my life. Specifically, we're looking into moving to an area of Pittsburgh called Squirrel Hill, but really I want to know if the entire are is safe.

Answer:
My Sister is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and I visited her frequently when she lived there. Coming from a small town I can understand your concern, but I am going to assure you that safety is not a problem at the University of Pittsburgh. It is a urban area, but that is why the city as well as the University of Pittsburgh have invested millions of dollars in public safety. At night the entire campus area is well lit, and there are constantly state and campus police roaming the streets. As long as your husband isn't doing things he should not be doing, the commute will be safe. There are so many people in that area it is almost impossible to get mugged on the street unless your out and about at a ridiculous hour by yourself. Its all about being aware of your surroundings and taking the necessary precautions to stay safe.

Pittsburgh is a nice city but still has it's share of crime. Squirrel Hill is a nice area. There is parts of the city you will want to stay out but you probably would not want to go to those neighborhoods anyway. You will be alright in Pittsburgh go to the strip district for good shopping, restaurants and bars. You will like the city once you learn where everything is and how to get around. Good Luck

I live just outside the city of Pittsburgh and I agree with the other posters... It has it's sketchy areas as all cities do. Keep in mind that you don't have to live in the city for your husband to go to school at Pitt. Many many, burbs and outlying towns are a mere 15 minutes from the college campus. Squirrel Hill is nice... Mainly large old houses and rentals there. It all depends on whether you want to live city or a bit further out..

Yes, in general Pittsburgh is quite safe. As for Squirrel Hill, good choice. Very nice and safe area, always lots of police driving by just to make sure. You will not have anything to worry about!
