Are there Any Nice Areas in Philadelphia?

  • Are there any neighborhoods in Philadelphia that are actually nice, with expensive houses/apartments and maybe a park? A friend is trying to say no part of the city has any classy areas like other major cities do(not including UPenn)

    While you're friend is totally informed. Rittenhouse Square is a neighborhood that surrounds a square of the same name that is a park. Same goes for Washington Square. Both are upscale neighborhoods. Fairmount borders Fairmont Park which is the largest urban park in the United States (roughly five times larger than Central Park). Yes there are a few shady areas of Fairmont Park, but a lot of it is quite lovely especially along Boathouse Row. Also, there wouldn't be a Society Hill without any society.

the city is going down the tubes, but fortunatly, you can still find nice areas...Far Northeast philly is still pretty decent. and i believe there are still some nice areas in south philly also. but i live in the Far, Far NE and been up here most of my life. its still pretty nice.

Both previous answers are incorrect. There are a number of nice areas in the city. As just one example, the Rittenhouse Square area is a small park surrounded by boutiquey stores, restaurants, and expensive hotels and apartments. And I think in general Philadelphia is on an upswing, with other areas getting increasingly gentrified. Art Museum is close to Center City and a very nice area. I remember houses routinely going for $400K five years ago. Chestnut Hill is another well-to-do area, and has been for at least a century and probably more. If you look at a SEPTA system map you'll see there are not one but two train lines serving Chestnut Hill. There is a huge beautiful park called Morris Arboretum nearby.
