What do you think when you hear Philadelphia?

How bad are winters in Philadelphia?

  • I know last year was an anomaly weather wise, but on average how "bad" or "harsh" are the winters in Philly? Are they cold and snowy, mild, rainy, etc? Weather is highly subjective but I want to hear some opinions from those who live or have lived in Philadelphia. Last year, Philly received close to 80 inches of snow, and here in Cincinnati where I live, we received about 36, and people seemed to endlessly complain about how "bad" the winter was. I'm thinking the winters might be a lot worse in Philadelphia. I can't imagine nor do I want to think about the hysteria 80 inches of snow would create in Cincinnati. Lol

  • Answer:

Winters in Philly are wintry lol. Last year was the exception, because it hasn't been snow like that for about 15 years (my grandmom said that one year they got snow all the way up to the window) THe coldest ive seen it get is about in the teens, maybe lower. but we usually get maybe two major snowstorms, and the rest of the time its just really cold.

Winters have been very cold for the past two or three years but before those two or three years winter in Philly was not really cold but this winter I'm thinking it's going to be freezing because there was a blizzard last year

They're usually not that bad. We never really get that much snow except for last year, but usually the winters are cold like 20's and 30's cold.

Were always cold. We get snow every winter, but usually not a lot. Last winter, we had a few storms. But it's always cleared up within a few days.

Snow here doesn't usually start until January and we don't normally get two feet at a time like last year. We usually get a few snowstorms but nothing compared to 2009-2010.

I would expect that anyone moving from Ohio to Philadelphia would find Philly winters bearable. The temperature (not factoring wind chill) can get in the teens, but rarely does it go to single digits. Our snowy season tends to be mid-winter, from Jan to early Feb., and they're usually not that bad-- not crippling, just a big nuisance. Last year (2009-10) was an all-time record-setting series of snowstorms for Philly. Usually, Philly can take a big storm and recover in a day or 2. But last year the storms were close together, allowing little time for recovery. We usually get some snow accumulation every year, but we do not regularly get multiple feet of it. Usually, our bad storms will be 5-7 years apart, and then only once for that season. Don't judge Philly's winter by last year. Prior to that, our biggest storms were in 2002-03, 1995-96, 1977-78. I happen to be living in Philly for each of them, and I think 1995-96 was the most crippling. But even last year the city was "functional" in about 3 days.

Winters aren't usually too too bad. I live in the suburbs and last winter was very harsh, but completely out of the ordinary for here. I've never been to Ohio but I imagine the winters are worse where you are. I'm not a fan of cold weather, period (which is why im looking at colleges more down south). The temperatures get to the 30s and 20s and sometimes teens depending on the day, but usually the weather is tolerable. We get snow occasionally, and may get like 2 snow days a year at school. Summers are the opposite and it can get into the 90s (heat waves then are common). Compared to the rest of the US, the Philadelphia/NYC region has very diverse weather.
