What are the differences between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia?

Philadelphia vs Pittsburgh biggest differences?

  • I'm a native Philadelphian, but I just decided I love the university of Pittsburgh and I really think I want to go to school there. I love cities and of course Pitt is in the city, but I only got to spend 1 night there so I don't know all about it. Im biased, but I know I like Philly more than Pittsburgh. In fact my first choice school is penn, but it's super hard to get into and too expensive so I don't have my hopes up. What are the best and worst parts of Pittsburgh and how does it compare to Philly?

  • Answer:

= Pittsburgh is cheaper, by far. I lived in Bryn Mawr, PA (suburb of Philly) and paid $950 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment. This was from 2006 to June 2009. I moved back to Pittsburgh and pay $600 for a similarly sized 1BR apartment in the Shadyside area. I used to pay $825 for a 2BR apartment back in 2006 (also in Shadyside). For the price of a normal apartment in Philadelphia, you could live in a luxury apartment in Pittsburgh. Don't be worried about finding stuff to do in Pittsburgh. I've lived in both cities and there is just as much to do in Pittsburgh as there is in Philadelphia. There are lots of museums, bars, and restaurants around the city. The one advantage Philadelphia has is its location - about an hour from the Jersey Shore, ~2 hours from NYC, and ~3 hours from Washington DC. The public transportation system in Philly is also much better than in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh, however, is a MUCH safer city than Philadelphia.

Shoredude is right. Pittsburgh is a midwest/Appalachian city, not an eastern city. The vibe is very different. People speak with a funny accent, and call "soda" -"pop" and use the term jag off instead of ....well, you know what I mean. The food sucks, and there are three times as many hills to deal with. It is a long drive to New York, DC or the Shore. the nice neighborhoods may be a cleaner, but the bad neighborhoods are more dangerous. It is an okay city, but it in no way compares to Philly. It is hard to believe that they are in the same state.

Pittsburgh is more Midwest than Philly. It is also a lot slower. Squirrel Hill and Mt. Washington are both nice neighborhoods in Pittsburgh.
