What is the cost of living in Pennsylvania?

Has anyone moved to pennsylvania from new jersey?

  • i was considering moving to pennsylvania because I've heard the cost of living is a little less expensive than what it is in NJ.And I see alot of people are living in PA that commute to work in NJ/NY so there must be some reason people would be willing to make such a long commute just to live in PA.I live in Northern NJ somewhat close to Newark with my parents and i wana move out but cant afford the rent in NJ.I need some advice and opinions on whether moving will be better or will I be better off staying in NJ.Ive been considering also Washington DC, Maryland,Virginia. Can anyone tell me what towns in PA are cheapest to live, is car insurance cheaper than NJ etc. things like that.Thanx in Advance. O yea and if i wanted to keep my job and commute how far is the drive from nj to pa.i work close to NY

  • Answer:

I have lived in PA my whole life. (the Pittsburgh area) It's a very nice state, most of the towns are quiet and people here are friendly and lend a helping hand whenever they can. For taxes, PA doesn't have any taxes on clothing or food and sales tax is usually around 6%. Rent is very cheap in all the towns compared to other states that I have visited. In the area I live in, you can get a nice apartment for about $450 a month. It's a very beautiful state too, with the hills and the trees. It's especially beautiful when the leaves change. One thing about PA is that the roads are not that great and can get dangerous in winter. (Pendot sucks). Hope I helped!

You are looking at living in the Poconos or in the Lehigh Valley based upon where you work in NJ. Rents will be much cheaper than where you live now. Car insurance should be cheaper as well. If you buy a house, property taxes will definitely be cheaper. Overall, taxes in PA are at a fixed rate as for income taxes, so you would have to do the calculations to see if you would save or pay more in income taxes. Overall, I like PA, and if you check out the Poconos, you will find some really pretty areas as far as the geography is concerned. Good luck.

My husband and I are transplants from North NJ (by the Delaware Water Gap) to Philly- we currently pay $770 a month for a 3 bedroom house with garage, driveway, three stories, and a yard... we could NEVER touch that in NJ for that amount of $$. Car insurance is cheaper, so are MANY things... But if you are still bent on commuting to almost NY, you should live in NJ- if you head to the Poconos, Rout 80 is stopped traffic for the hours between 6am and 10am heading in that direction... you could live in the New Hope ares and commute across the bridge, but any of these options are going to f$^k your car up after a year or so... Good Luck!!

I moved from Philly to NJ. I am happy about this thus far. However, PA is pretty nice. Don't move too close to Philly..it's really ghetto and just filthy. I'm not a big fan of NJ, but Philly is just a joke. I am so embarressed to be from there! :(

You're looking to be moving into either the Poconos along I-80 or the Lehigh Valley along I-78, as those are the only ways you can hope to commute to NYC in 2 hours or less. Areas along PA-33 and US-22 can also provide quick access to 80 and 78 depending where along them you settle. The Easton and Stroudsburg areas are both right across the bridges into PA, and relatively cheap places. If you go a little further into the Lehigh Valley you find Allentown and Bethlehem and such, however the deeper you go the more horrific the traffic you get, Lehigh Valley generates its own sizable rush hour. You could also pick somewhere along 95 just the far side of Trenton, but the traffic is significantly worse coming up the turnpike to NY than the relatively peaceful route along 80 or 78.
