Fun things to do near or in philadelphia?

  • I would like some suggestions on some activites a family could do near or in philadelphia pa. It should be fun for everyone and be a nice place. I'd also like for it to not take a big chunk out of my wallet either :P

    Well in Philadelphia itself I think the Franklin Institute would be my #1 choice. It's an interactive science museum that I still enjoy going to. It's also in a great museum/touristy area with lots of other fun family activities to do. Outside the city I'd recommend Hershey Park (it's a kind of long drive though) or the Camden Aquarium. Also, about 15 minutes outside Center City is the King of Prussia Mall, which is the second largest mall in the country and a lot of fun.

I think it depends on your definition of "near". Lancaster, PA is about a one hour and forty five minute drive and it's in the heart of Amish Country. There are lots of tourist things to do there that cost money but if you don't want to spend money you can just drive around and see an entirely different culture. Hershey is another 20 minute drive and has a huge amusement park which isn't cheap but Hershey's Chocolate World is free. Closer to Philly is Valley Forge and in Philly are all of the historic sites like Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and lots of historic, quaint streets and buildings that don't cost anything. The bad news is that you have to be able to deal with traffic. Good luck
