Is Philadelphia safe for my family?

What neighborhoods in Philadelphia are safe?

  • I'm going to be going to UPenn next fall. I will be starting a family soon and want to live in a safe, family-friendly neighborhood in the city. I've checked police reports and other things and have gotten all kinds of mixed information, so I want to know, what neighborhoods are safe, have good transit access, and are relatively affordable (rent up to $800/month)?

  • Answer:

Use this: http://philly.everyblock.com/ ...and this: http://www.philadelphiaspeaks.com/forum/ The first one is a general neighborhood blog and crime report, and the second one is a forum for neighbors that is broken down by neighborhood. You'd be better off asking in there. There is no one area in Philly that is crime free. You can pay $1,000,000 and face the same quality of life issues that someone who paid $80,000 for their home will. Look into the Art Museum area and Fairmount. From my time up there, it seems like a very family-oriented, family friendly neighborhood. A one bedroom place around here may be kind of small for $800/month but it will be your own place that's walking distance from Center City. You can also walk, ride, cab it or take the train to Penn from here. I also believe they have a shuttle that runs through these neighborhoods as well.

Northeast and Northwest Philly are best in terms of safety. The farther up you go in both of these areas, the "safer" it is. But if you are only willing to spend around $800, then I say go for areas near the Oxford Circle neighborhood, or areas near the Roosevelt Mall.

$800.oo a month, in Philly? You don't stand very good chances of finding too much in a 'safe' neighborhood. Not that any part of the city is that "unsafe". Most people who are killed in Philadelphia are in the wrong place (or doing the wrong thing) at the wrong time. If you don't buy or sell drugs, or associate with those who do, you will find Philadelphia relatively safe. Why don't you ask us about some specific addresses, and we can give you a fair opinion.

northeast is your best bet, anyting north of grant ave & west of the blvd. is your best bet , but grant & academy is not bad either and you can probaly find rent for about 800 around there. there is also fox chase & rockledge areas (rockledge is right out of the city limit) ,you could probly find an apt for that price around there.

yeah northeast is pretty safe. south philly? uhh NO. not even. My uncle lives in Lower Merion- thats a really nice neighborhood right out of philly. You could also look into Delaware and just commuting on the regional rail. But yeah, northeast is where every family tries to make it to.

At that rent, I would look at Pennsport in S. Philly or the Northeast, but then you have to pay for transit. If rent is not a problem, go with Society Hill downtown or Chestnut Hill in the Northwest.
