Where is the best place to stay that is very cheap in Philadelphia?

Can you recommend a safe place to stay near Philadelphia connected by bus/train?

  • I am going to be working in Philadelphia for 1 year. I am looking for a safe nearby (within about 10 miles) place to live. It has to be connected by bus/train. Someone recommended Cherry Hill, NJ. Are there others?

I'm assuming that you'll be working in Center City. I wouldn't recommend Cherry Hill, because the train in to Philly is going to dump you at 30th Street Station. If you're looking to live in Jersey, you probably want to live along the PATCO, which goes through Camden County and will bring you through Center City. You can check their website here: http://www.ridepatco.org/ The PATCO runs 24 hours a day, though late at night it can be a bit of a wait. Of the towns along the line, I would recommend Ashland, Haddonfield, Westmont, or Collingswood. (Collingswood is an "up and coming" town, so some neighborhoods aren't that great.) There's also the RiverLine, which goes out through Burlington County. The website is here: http://www.riverline.com/ The RiverLine can have some shady characters sometimes, and it doesn't run 24 hours. But, it goes through some really great towns, including Burlington (which has some sketchy neighborhoods, but also some beautiful, historic ones), Riverton, and Palmyra. There are some new townhouses/condos being constructed in Cinnaminson directly across from the RiverLine station (or at least, there were about 6 months ago - they may be completed by now). I hope that helps!

Depends where in Philly you will be working and what your budget is.. There are many reasonable and decent apartments in NE Philly and the Bucks county area (Bensalem, etc) that are on or near regional rail stations. In NJ, most of the decent places are a little further than walking distance, but a short drive to the PATCO line. You will need a car in NJ either way. If budget allows, you could of course stay in Center City itself, there are some excellent apartments.

I don't know why all these people that commented before me are only talking about the train when you asked for both the train and the bus but whatever..Cherry Hill is nice and is accessible by bus if you live close to route 70, route 38, Haddonfield Road or Chapel Avenue. Or if you live over in the Woodcrest section the PATCO train runs through there. Merchantville is nice as well and is a very small town. The buses run there on Maple Avenue and Park Avenue. But in Merchantville no matter where you live it is a short walk to the bus. Westmont, Collingswood and Haddonfield are also nice towns and there is where the PATCO train goes through. I know there are some buses that run along the train that don't go over to Philadelphia but would be able to get you to train station to complete your trip if you weren't within walking distance. Audubon is fairly nice as well and depending upon which one your closest too there are buses that run both on Black Horse Pike and White Horse Pike. Going a little more north there is Cinnaminson which once again depending upon where you live you could access the bus on Route 130 or the riverline which is on I want to say Main St but I'm not sure if that's what it's called and that would take you to the Transportation Center and you would get off there and get on the PATCO train. As for areas of Philadelphia I would say Manayunk, Center City, Parts of South Philly and the NE..Hopefully I was some help to you..Good Luck!
