What parts of Philadelphia should I avoid?

Is South Philly a dangerous part of Philadelphia?

  • The reason why I ask is because I'm hoping to go to Philadelphia this fall, and I really want to check out the locations where past Rocky movies were shot at, and based on the research I've done, it would appear a lot of the locations are in the more dangerous parts of Philly, and as much as I'd love to check the Rocky landmarks out, I really would rather avoid going to any dangerous parts in Philadelphia. I'm a white boy from Texas. Even though I don't have a strong southern draw, my Texan accent might get me in trouble. :-) Plus, my Mother will be going with me and I don't want her to be in any danger. Thanks to a Rocky related website, I have a list of all the spots various Rocky films were shot at, as well as other things I hope to do in Philly. If any helpful local on here wants to take a look at it, and tell me what's a safe location, and what's not, I'd be very grateful.     I lived in South Philly for 19 years now and never had any dangerous life threatening encounters. Some people can be rude & such but what city doesn't have people like that? Majority of South Philly is nice, some areas are great, some are okay. If you had to chose an area in Philly I would suggest South since there seems to be a lot more variety. Or Northeast Philly which is a really great area. West & North I would avoid.

South Philly is not too dangerous. You should be careful anywhere you go in the city, but you'll like South Philly. Lots of local culture and great food. Check out the Italian Market while you are there. Mostly you want to stay out of West and North Philly.

South Philly is NOTHING compared to West Philly! South Philly people are actually nice people. The dude who cleans at Pat's is the best! He's a sweet dude, and he's real nice. I love him! :)

I agreed South Philly is not dangerous it all depends on where you are going. I do also agreed that you should avoidWest & North and just avoid streets that are trashy and dirty. Hope you have a great time staying here!^^

It can be but not as bad as some other parts of the city. You just have to be careful. How about you contact me through YA with you list of Rocky sites and I can be more specific as to how bad they are. Really, I don't think there will be a problem visiting most of them, especially since you'll be doing that during the day.

Don't want to scare you or Mom, BUT, only travel around Philadelphia in the daylight hours. (and) can you legally carry a gun? One time a young kid came up from behind me and put a knife against my neck and took all my money, Another time a guy tried to choke me. And, both events were daytime operations. And, I'm a 300+ pound X-Marine Platoon Sergeant. Just stay sharp and you'll be o.k. in and around South Philly areas. Philadelphia has area's where the cops only show up when they in in force dealing with a big problem. But, I used to live in South Philadelphia. Like anyplace in the USA, once the locals accept you all the silly problems go away.
