I'm a social young professional relocating to Philadelphia, what is the best area to look for an apartment?
-
I am looking to live in an area that has a lot going on and a lot of other young professionals in the area. I'd like to be able to walk out of my apartment and walk to a coffee shop, a bar, a shopping center or a restuarant. I've lived in or temporarily stayed in, a lot of cities across the country and the world and the best answer would be from someone who has also done so. A lot of people who have been in some cities their whole lives think their city is amazing and will make a city or area out to be great only because they don't really have any idea how it compares to other places. So in short , any advice from someone who knows a lot about Philly but also about other places would be really appreciated.

Answer:
Check into Manayunk, Rittenhouse Square, or Old City. They are trendy, young and hip and have the staples you are looking for. Be warned....they are PRICEY! Philly is great!

Chloros & Lola have the right idea. Those suggestions are great for a young professional. Manyunk offers as slightly more calm existence than Olde City. If you are not familiar with the terrain Manyunk is very hilly & hosts a major cyling competition every year. The name of it escapes me. If you plan on driving to work everyday instead of public transportation this is difficult to do in Manyunk during the snowy season. Olde City & Rittenhouse are great too. I suggest you take a weekend trip. Check out these three areas. These are similarly priced to other major cities. So not cheap but you cant get a great place in a great area for pennies.

One of the hot spots in Philly right now is the Manayunk area. There are lots of young professionals there with a great strip filled with bars, shops and restaurants. Plus Wissahickon park is very close if you like to go for a walk with your dog, jog, ride on your bike. It is nice because it isn't downtown, but close enough, and not far from King of Prussia with its large shopping mall and suburban offerings. Although, every great place does have its quirks, and Manayunk is known for being a tough place to park since it is situated on the hills rising above the Schuylkill river.

My best advice would be.....DON'T GO TO PHILLY! The South Street/Art Museum District (Rocky) is the place that's taking off for you, but, don't. I lived there for almost 20 years before I moved out. It's not safe. Don't go.
