Is it safe to walk around in North Philadelphia?

Why do people in Philadelphia walk around with no shirts on?

  • I was watching an episode of "Parking Wars" on the Biography Channel; in one segment they were booting someone's car and it seemed to me that nobody in the neighbourhood was wearing a shirt. The owner came running down the street without one on, and another guy in the background was walking down in the street without one on either. Is this considered normal in Philadelphia? Or parts of the US? Where I'm from in Australia it is unseen.

    You only see that in like the crappy parts of the city for example North Philly and Kensington...People from Kensington are just disgusting...In the nice part where all the tourist come (Center City) you do not see that kind of mess unless people are jogging or in the park playing a game. We don't run around the streets with our shirts off.

Well if it;s summer time & its really hot then some people walk around with no shirt on. But only in their neighborhood. You won't see people walking around center city or somehwere like that with no shirt on.

I have to admit that I've never seen this and I've lived in Philly almost my whole life and been in darn near every neighborhood at some time or other. Everyone seems to have shirts on where ever I've been, even if it an old "wife beater." I speculate that the people making the show may have wanted to represent the people in it as low life slobs, so they have them walk around with no shirts on. TV producers are known to do strange things.

The other time I see this is during the summer when people are jogging/playing frisbee/having a catch in Fairmount Park or Rittenhouse. Otherwise, this is not something one would typically see walking around Philadelphia.

Yes, probably extras...I saw an episoded where this one lady kept laughing, hacking and coughing all thru the show the producers thaught it was funny..I thought it was annoying I don't watch anymore

oh my hun, no! I was born and raised in philly and only in the bad parts have i seen that. And if i did it was a very rare sight. Usually if some guy does that it's because they are either sweaty, or trying to be a gangster. the biography channel is obviously mistaken. Philly can be a great place to live!
