Cheap and fun things to do in Philadelphia?
-
I'm a college student in Philadelphia living off of a budget. I'd like to know some cheap but also fun places to sight see, eat at, and play at. Thanks!

Try the Mutter Museum. It is totally bizarre and not very expensive. No one will ever say it is a typical tourist destination. According to Wikipedia, it was ranked number 7 in the top ten creepiest places on earth (based on a recent TLC special). Eastern State Penitentiary is also an interesting place to visit. It is still a bit creepy but nothing like the Mutter Muesum. It is in a really nice area (Fairmount) with lots of nice restuarents, close to the Art Museum. OK, so those were both a bit creepy (but cheap!) - let me lighten the mood a bit. Since I mentioned the Art Museum, you could go hang out on Kelly Drive on Summer Sundays - the drive is closed to vehicle traffic and people roller blade, bicycle, throw frisbees and generally relax and enjoy life. The bike trail there runs down to South Street and all the way out past Valley Forge. The Art Museum has a nice Sunday brunch that also gets you admission to the museum but it doesn't meet your test of being cheap - I think I remember it being about $30 a person. But if you feel like splurging a little some time, it's an option. And you can run up the steps and wave your arms around like Rocky for nothing. It's weird, but even though the movie was released in like 1976, you still see people running up the steps and doing the "Rocky Dance" every day. Then there is hanging out at Penns Landing or Manayunk during the free events at those places. Or if you are a skate boarder, you could go down to the FDR Skate Park or go downtown to Love Park (though skating there is strongly discouraged). There are lots of other things you can do for little or no money but this will get you some ideas maybe. Mi G - read more carefully - she (I assume Dee Dee is a she) said no COMMON tourist attractions - the Mutter Museum, Eastern State and so on are not "common" by any means. I suppose you could say running up the Art Museum steps and hanging out on Kelly Drive are not uncommon but they ARE free, which was another condition.

Independence Hall is a great low-budget thing to do. It is only like 3 dollars for tour and it is fun to learn alot about the city of Philadelphia. To eat, go to Jim's Steaks in Downtown Philly. They have the best cheesesteaks in town and are amazingly cheap!!! Like 5 dollars for a foot long cheesesteak and a drink! How much better can it get?!?!?!

You could hang out at South Street you don't HAVE to buy anything you could just walk up and down it and see the people, The gallery is fun you can catch the sub for cheap and hang out, downtown is always fun going to like 40th st and getting pizza or hanging out and they're are arcades there and it's basically a college area perfect for you, Franklin Mills mall is huge and fun and on tuesdays you can see a movie for 4 bucks, Willow grove mall is fun too it's a nice size you can eat lunch cruise the mall and chill. Oh and it's always fun to catch the bus or sub downtown and just walk around on a nice day. Have fun.

You can Ride the Duck (which I believe you can pick up across from the Liberty Bell) and they will show you different things to do around the city. Plus it's pretty cool to go on bus that will go into the water. I believe the ticket is much cheaper if you show your student id. Most of the sight seeing things in Philly are cheap because they are all government owned.
