Are there any abandoned places in Pennsylvania?

Are there any cool abandoned places great for photographing in the pennsylvania/ new jersey area?

  • Answer:

Eastern State Penitentiary is not abandoned but it might also be a good spot. It's a "preserved ruin" and is pretty amazing. http://www.easternstate.org/ There are also some abandoned industrial ruins along the unpaved section Manayunk Tow Path, part of the Schuylkill River Trail. I've gotten some really interesting shots there. http://www.schuylkillriver.org/

Take the Chestnut Hill West train out of Suburban station, when you get up to North Philly you will see MANY abandoned factories. Just drive up Broad Street and look around and you can see many abandoned sites. Since industry died in Philly, you will find lots of abandoned buildings. Wander a little north of the zoo and there are many abandoned homes that you can tell were beautiful once upon a time. I'm not sure if an abandoned factory is "cool" when you realize that jobs were lost when the building was closed.

The old school in Lambertville NJ. Built in the 1920's it burned down maybe twenty years ago. You used to be able to go inside it, but I havn't been there in ten years, so I don't know if the rooff has callopsed or not. There are a few buildings on the property, all stone and brick. It is very eerily beautiful It is off route 179 just north of town. You can see it from the road on the right hand side as you are leaving town high up on the hill. There is a steep driveway that cuts up to it. It is definitely worth checking out, though don't park on the road its on, the neighbors will call the police and it is illegal to go on the property. Ah Ha! Wierd NJ did a story on it a few years back. And it is definitely still standing! http://www.weirdnj.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=97&Itemid=28

Not sure about "abandoned" places, but there are countless places great for photographing in Amish Country. (To be specific, Lancaster, PA!) I am pretty sure there are some around there, somewhere.
