Does Philadelphia have a subway system?
-
I am looking for an easy way to get around without having to deal with the expense of taxis. I am coming into the 30th Street station on Amtrak and have about 3 hours to spend before I need to leave for the airport. Does Philadelphia have a subway system? I'm not having a lot of luck finding answers on Google. Can I get from 30th Street station to South Street and then up to the Liberty Bell/Independence Hall area??? Since I have so little time, I want to make sure that I have everything planned out. I've been told that I can check my luggage at the train station for a fee and I'm fine with that. At least I won't have to lug it around. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:
Septa is the transit company name. I agree w the other poster... skip South Street. It isnt what it once was. The Art Museum steps are a popular stop for tourists and the Rocky statue is at the base of the stairs. Reading Terminal Market is a great place for a bite to eat. Good Luck! Enjoy!

There is both a subway system and a regional train system. You would do best to take a regional train to Market Street East Station (that's only 2 stops). You'll then be at Markt and 10th. The Liberty Bell is 5 short blocks from there, as are all the other historical buildings. If you don't mind the cost, you can take a one hour sight seeing buggy ride. From there you can take a bus to South Street, or even walk. There's lots to see along the way. If it were me, and I had 3 hours, I would forget about South Street. The historical section itself can take all day. And by staying along Market St., you can catch the train back without worrying about being late.

There is a subway, however, three hours really isn't enough time to play around on a public transportation system that you are not familiar with. You don't have enough time to get from 30th St to the Liberty Bell, then to the airport. see www.septa.org for info on the subway and other public transportation venues.

Ull have plenty of time as long as you don't spend to much time at one place..from 30th st ur less than 10mins on the Market frankford LIne to Independence Hall station 2nd st.station..Independence mall is at 4th st Bettsie Ross house if i remember is also on 4th st..you can get back on the Market Frankford line and be back at 30th st in time to catch the Airport line of the regional system to the airport.

Your Amtrak ticket is good for the ride into Center City. They probably don't check anyway. Three hours is not much time. There's checking your bags in and out, walking through stations, waiting for trains, paying fares, walking the street. You will not have much time for sightseeing at Independence Park area. Trains to the airport only run twice an hour, so it's important not to miss this train. http://www.septa.org/schedules/rail/pdf/air.pdf I suggest cutting back to something closer to Amtrak, the Ben Franklin Memorial at the Franklin Institute, and the Comcast Experience video wall in the lobby of Philadelphia's tallest building. http://www2.fi.edu/exhibits/permanent/franklin_national_memorial.php http://www.nps.gov/inde/benjamin-franklin-national-memorial.htm http://www.visitphilly.com/museums-attractions/philadelphia/comcast-experience-video-wall-comcast-center/
