Is philadelphia safe and is it nice to live?

Safe areas in Philadelphia to live?

  • I am needing to move to Philadelphia for a job in Center City and I am trying to research safe places to live that are somewhat close to where I will be working. Any suggestions?

  • Answer:

Mostly all of Center City is safe to live in as well as full of activity and things to do. If you don't want right down town, then I would suggest the areas of Queen Village just below South Street, or the Art Museum Area as nice alternatives.

I agree that the center city neighborhoods tend to be safer and generally well kept. I would define them as Front Street to 24th St, Race to South St. They are also among the most expensive to live in. Just north and west of downtown is the Art Museum area - pricey but green, close to downtown, lots of restaurants, cafes, shops. Just south and east of downtown is the Queen Village area - not the safest or prettiest, particularly given the price point. I would think a bit further south near the Italian Market area is a better bet. Its a newly trendy area with tons of shops, restaurants, a supermarket, parks, etc. The price is better than downtown or the neighborhoods directly adjacent to downtown. It's only a 10 minute bus ride to downtown. The neighborhoods include Passyunk Square (Broad to 8th, Washington to Tasker), Bella Vista (9th to 4th, Washington to Tasker).

I live right off Fitler Square. The parking is much easier then if you were south of South Street and it's a safe neighborhood. But with any big city you still need to be safe and aware. Any area in between Fitler Square and the Shcukyll River, and Walnut and South is great. A few good BYO's in the area, laundromats, grocery stores, bars, and the beer distributor and parks nearby. Also, the entrance to the running trail is right there as well.

The manayunk-roxborough area of the city is an extremely safe part of the city. The crime rate is very low, and the commute to center city is fast and easy. Great location offers many recreational and occupational oppurtunities. Housing prices range from 200,000-400,00, with a few exceptions. Good Luck.

if u can afford it stay in Center City...neighborhoods like Bella Vista, Queens Village (South), Nothern Liberties (slightly North), some parts of University City (West) are also nice. Avoid the following: Point Breeze, far West, Southwest, North, West Oak Lane, etc.
