Answer:
The motto, The City of Brotherly Love, came from William Penn, the English Quaker, who envisioned the area as a place where anyone of any color or background could live together in peace and harmony, thus, the motto about brotherly love. Philadelphia aka The City of Brotherly Love = "brotherly love" from philos, "love", and adelphos "brother" You are brave to go watch the Eagles play - could be worse though - could be Michigan...brrrrr...

Founded by Billy (OK, William!) Penn (Pennsylvania means Penn's sylvan or Penn's woods), Philadelphia is City of Brotherly Love. The name is Greek. A Franco-phile means one that loves all things French, therefore phile is love. Delphia or adelphia is person (I think there maybe some loose translation here, though). So - City of Brotherly Love.

I always thought it was just because that's what the name means, literally - Phila = Love and Delphi = Brothers, like the Adelphi in London

I wasn't going to answer this one, because so many got it right (ot at least partially right). The there are so many numbskulls who answered you, I just had to jump in. It is named after a city in Asia Minor, Philadelphia, and quite simply, the name translated means city of brotherly love. William Penn was a Quaker, who was very tolerant, but that has nothing to do with the nickname ( and Pennsylvania means penn's woods in Latin).

When William Penn first founded Philly, he welcomed all different religions in. This was one of the first places in the world where a bunch of different types of people could peacefully interact with eachother, and so it was nicknamed the 'City of Brotherly Love'.

It's because the population is predominantly homosexual
