How much will the tolls be from Canada to Philadelphia?

I'm looking for total cost of tolls from washington dc to philadelphia? + Any recs for travel w/in the city?

  • I'm just trying to price the cost of the tolls. Since I will be in Philly for a weekend and need to know whether the subway system or the bus system, cabs, or trolley's are the most affordable/convenient way to transport within Philly. It doesn't sound like there is much parking if we decide to drive from place to place. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Answer:

I would have roughly ten dollars in change in a zip lock bag beside me for the tolls. And some cash for gas, if needed. I packed a roll of quarters in a bag for my trip to DC from Philly. As far as the transportation goes. It depends where in the city you will be going. If your staying in Center City or traveling through, I would drive. Im not one who likes the bus system here in Philly. It's the second, soon to be the first, highest in the nation. Cabs are overpriced as well. It cost me $8.00 to go eleven blocks west a day last week. So, if your driving, don't be too concerned about parking. In the city there are plenty of lots and garages. If your parking on the street, there are meters. After nine PM and Sundays the meters are free. Sometimes, depending on destitation, there are no meters and street parking is an option. Even if you have to park and walk a block or two, do it.

The car toll is zero if you take I-95 North to I-695 North to Exit 32, US 1 North and into PA. US 1 is a very scenic drive and you would take US 30 into downtown Philly. The car toll is also zero if you reverse the above route. Otherwise, you would pay $10 going north and $5 going south Most street parking is free after 6 PM and Philly is a safe town for parking a car on the street.

It's about $10 each way. I think there are two $2 tolls and a $3 toll. On the way back, one of those tolls jumps to $5. Plan on taking $10 for tolls each way. As for traveling in and around Phila, take your car. It's not impossible to find a place to park. Drive around a little. After 5:00pm, many of the places have reduced parking. Or, you may luck up and find a metered spot. Bring quarters. If traveling in the daytime, park at a cheap lot on the edges of Center City and walk, catch a bus or subway into town. When in Philly, I hardly ever get public transportation. It's too easy to get around. Tip: If doing the Parkway area, get to the Art Museum early and score free parking along the backside of the museum. Or, get free parking at one of the tiny lots along Kelly Drive. But, you must get there early...like by 7:30am. Enjoy yourself, and if possible, get to the Tut Exhibit! It's the last time it will be in the US.

Tolls are between $15 and $20 round trip. I have done this trip often, and I usually fill up in Philly and then have to fill up before I leave DC... However, I have a 13 gallon tank, so I might be the exception. As far as public transportation goes, I'm going against the first two posts. If you are unfamiliar with the area, there are a multitude of one way and dead end streets just waiting to confuse the tourist! I am a die-hard driver, and I despise driving in Center City with a passion that cannot be described. I work in Center City, and if I didn't have to drive for work, I'd be the first person on the train! Go to www.septa.org or call 215.580.7800 for trip planning information. You can give your starting and ending addresses and they will tell you what bus/trolley/subway to take. If you are going to use public transportation, make sure to purchase tokens. You come out cheaper- Fare one way is $2, but a two pack of tokens is $2.60. You can purchase a ten pack for $13. I don't know if Septa has day passes or 10 ride cards or anything like that, but you can find out on the site or by calling. Also, parking garages are plentiful, but they can add up after a while. It really depends on your budget. Parking garages in Center City can range from $9 for the early bird special (in by 9 out by 5) to $17 for the day. And I don't think the early bird specials are offered on the weekends... Again, it depends on your budget. Septa does stop at all the major tourist attractions- the Museum circle, Penns Landing, and the other person is right- you have to see the King Tut exhibit! Good Luck!
