Should I move to Chicago or Philadelphia?

How does Philadelphia rank compared to other big cities?

  • I am planning to move to Philadelphia next year. I am an aspiring actor who does not see the need in moving to much larger markets, such as NYC, just to end up competing with other actors and not have many chances. I would much rather be CLOSE to NYC without actually living there. Also, I want to live in a BIG city with lots of culture, arts, cheap housing prices and a booming NIGHTLIFE! With all of this said, how does Philadelphia compare to other cities, such as New York, Chicago, Washington, DC, Atlanta, San Francisco and Los Angeles? Is it a good place to experience all of the above? If not, then where else would you suggest?

  • Answer:

It depends on what category you are looking for a ranking. Philadelphia is a vary large City made up of many small neighborhoods. It has fantastic colleges and universities, incredible museums. lots of great theater and music, fun nightlife and a spectacular location. Philadelphia is less than two hours from sea shore resorts, two hours from mountain resorts , two hours from NYC and a little over two hours fro Washington DC. It has a much better climate than Chicago, it is much safer than DC or Atlanta or LA, it is much easier to get around either by car or public transportation than LA or San Francisco or DC or NYC.

My Sister used to work in the film industry locally. Philadelphia does get a share of film & tv work. Lots of locals have gone onto do great stuff. From Kevin Bacon to Seth Green ( went school with him & his sister for a while). I have another bud who used to commute to Baltimore to work on HBO's "The Wire." Lots stage work too with the local theaters. And Broadway is only a 90 mile ride away. Cheaper to live than most cities. The housing boom/bust kinda passed us. Nightlife? Not great in Winter. Fewer earthquakes!

I would say yes, Philadelphia has all of what you're looking for. New York and Chicago would probably also fit your description, but I have a soft spot for Philly. (San Fran is expensive, DC empties out on off-hours, and LA is infested with cars). Philly has a very active theater and arts scene. There are more museums and cultural attractions than you could ever visit and most of them are high quality. Decent housing starts around $800 for an apartment. If you live downtown, you may only be able to afford a small apartment, but if you live in one of the more residential neighborhoods, you should be able to afford a bigger space. Philly has plenty of nightlife no matter what you're looking for. There's something for everybody. There is also excellent public transportation (SEPTA) that can get you anywhere. Philly does get a bad rap in the media, but it's undeserved. This city has so much to offer.
