What parts of Philadelphia should I avoid?
-
I'm going with my family and need to know what the bad areas of Philly are?
-
Answer:
There are good and bad parts. I would stay away from parts of North Philly; keep to Broad St. if you travel there. Parts of West Philly are good and bad as are parts of the lower North East. The upper Northeast is a decent enough area. There are also parts of South Philly that are both good and bad. Keep to the touristy areas (Chestnut Hill, Center City, and east South Philly - but not around 5th St near Carpenter) and you'll be fine. Have a good vacation!

NORTH PHILLY above Girard Ave. West Philly past University City. South Philly west of Broad St. There is really no need for tourists to venture out to these areas anyway, unless you're feeling adventurous.

West Philly, stay out of there. I wouldn't go into Northeast either. It's sorta bad, and there is nothing to do there anyway. Just stay near Center City, and South Philly. That's where there are things to do and see. It's not bad there either. Hope I helped!

EVERYWHERE!! I just sold my house which has been handed down in my family for the past 150 years cause it was sooo bad of an area. 10 years ago it was sooo safe but I have 2 kids and someone got shot right out front last week. We live in the suburbs now and absolutely love it. BE CAREFUL!!

Well it depends on what your family is use to and what type of site seeing your seeking. If your coming from another major city like Miami, Houston, San Diego and so on then you can expect the same things. You guys need to figure out what your going to philly for and stick to the plan. It's when that one person decides to to cut down that one street for a short cut when things go wrong.

Philly is all around pretty sketchy. If you are staying in Center City (where most of the tourist stuff is) you should be ok. But still be careful at night. Definitely do NOT go to North Philly or West Philly. Also stay out of University City (Univ. of Penn and Drevel Univ. are there) Also, Manayunk is ok, it's Main Street has a lot of funky shops along it and I don;t think that area is too bad. Chestnut Hill is ok too.

It really isn't that bad! Stay in center city, near the historic area, near Penns Landing and you will be fine. Don't go anywhere you don't feel safe and just don't bother anyone. Go out during the daylight and stay close at night time. Don't be worried, Philly is like every other city in this country. And just ask! People will let you know. Enjoy your stay!
