Amtrak is way too expensive. There is two ways much cheaper. You can take the bus from Chinatown that leaves hourly. The cost is $20.00 round trip and leaves you off at 11th and Arch in Philly. Or you can go to Penn Station and take NJ Transit to Trenton (Cost $18.50 round trip), from Trenton you take the R7 Septa (South Eastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority) to Philly which leaves you at Market Street East Station, Suburban Station or 30th Street Station (Cost $14.00 round trip) You will save money either way over Amtrak.

A much cheaper but time-consuming alternative to Amtrak is to take the SEPTA R7 Train from Philly to Trenton, then connect at Trenton to the New Jersey Transit train to Penn Station, NY. You can catch the R7 at Market East (around 18th & Market I think) or 30th Street Station, where Amtrak also leaves from. It's been awhile, but I recall the NJT ride is about 1 hour 20 minutes, the SEPTA maybe 50 minutes, plus a little time hanging out at the Trenton station. Bring something to read!

When I go from Philly to NYC, I take the Septa train to Trenton (R7, if I'm remembering correctly). Then from Trenton I get on the NJ Transit train to NYC.

Amtrak from Penn Station to 3oth Street Station in Philly. If you are really adventurious, New Jersey Transit to Trenton and then SEPTA to Philly.

Go to to 30th street station and ask for the train to NY!

Take the bus that lets you travel anywhere you want.

Your best bet would be Amtrak. I have taken that route many times. The bus sucks.

Call Amtrak at the Philadelphia Int'l Airport for accuracy

Coqui

Septa R7 local. You can pick that up at 30th street station, Suburban Station, or Market East Station. Take that all the way to the end (Trenton). In Trenton you can take the NJ Transit local train to NYC (Penn Station). Total cost will be about $15 one way and take you 2.5+ hours. Amtrak is much quicker but will cost you about $40 or $50.
