How expensive is it to live in Center City, Philadelphia?

  • Why is Center City Philadelphia so expensive? I figured since I want to open my own beauty salon that would be an excellent place to go but shesh. Is it that desirable to live there?

    dont know who you are laura, but center city is an amazing place to live. ever heard of rittenhouse? yeah, its a pretty nice place and where i live. it is very expensive, because it is worth it. once you go philadelphia, you cant go anywhere else. not even new york city. i would say, avoid west/south/northwest philly, but anywhere else is safe and great. if you are not easy with the price of center city, try northern liberties anywhere on the east side, preferably going up from society hill, which is kind of southeast but not really. its a lot cheaper, and simply amazing. you will love the people there and fall in love with the whole place. have fun lookign around though!

Most Downtown areas are expensive because there are so many businesses and people close together. One can take the R1 train from the airport to Center City very easily and that makes it a desirable place to travel to. I have always had the impression that it wouldn't be a very good place to live, but it's a big business center.

Any downtown area in a city will be pricey. High rents & taxes have made many businesses leave Center City. Plus there are few locations that are not office space or zoned for your that use.
