What are the best/safest areas in Philadelphia?

Are there any decent ski areas within an hour from Philadelphia?

  • I've been looking at a few colleges in Philadelphia PA, but I can't bear the thought of being more than an hour from good skiing. Is there anything worthwhile around the Philadelphia area? I don't know much about it...

  • Answer:

As you have read, you can go to the Poconos, but the mountains in PA are hills really. This is because these mountains are OLD and worn down. I am from there and live in Southern CA now. I would call the PA slopes bunny almost, but you can still ski, and they try to make them interesting. So go locally on weekends and try to get to other areas, either in the West or maybe Vermont over winter break. And pick your school on academics, not skiing!!!!!

There are several ski areas in the Pocono mountain range. Elk mountain is one of them. It is only about 1 and 1/2 hours from Philadelphia. It is an easy route from the PA turnpike to the NE extension. You will not be disappointed - it's beautiful!

It depends where you're coming from. If you live in Colorado or Lake Tahoe or Killington, yeah, you probably shouldn't come here. If you only want to get away every 2nd or 3rd weekend for a day or weekend trip, you'll be fine. The Pocono's are ok, if you snowboard, alot of the mountains are keeping up with decent parks and rails. Big Boulder has almost converted entirely into a terrain park. Overall, the Pocono's are about an 1 /12 hours. Elk Mountain is actually just over two.

East coast ski resorts don't compare even remotely to the west. Someone early wrote that they were bunny hills, and that is a very accurate description. Ive seen some in PA that are just hills that have been sliced up to try to make some sort of a slope for skiing...its really sad. An education is way more important than skiing, and if you make bank out of college you can take all the ski trips your heart desires. Bottom line, skiing in the East sucks if you every have experienced the western slopes, but there are places where you can push yourself along with your poles if it is that important to you.
