Good and/or inexpensive areas to live near Philadelphia?
-
I may be moving to Philadelphia in September for school (i'm still deciding where to go) and really don't know much about the area. I'd like to live outside the city, if possible, though still be able to easily get into the city for school and visiting. What are areas I guess either in philadelphia, or right outside, that aren't totally overwhelming city environments, that would still allow for easy access to the city? is there anytihng like that? thanks!

Answer:
Collingswood is the best! It has become one of the most desirable suburbs to live in. And you can take the speedline into the city, a 12 minute-ride.

Check out Conshohocken. It's a cool little town just minutes outside of Philly. Also, Jenkintown. Look on Craigslist for apts, however alot depends on where you go. Both are close to the train & east access to Temple & the city.

Try Northeast Philadelphia. It's more a neighborhood atmosphere, nice area, but easy train ride to the city. It will depend also on where you go to school. Temple is in a completely different area, for example, from U of P or Drexel, and that would affect where would be convenient to stay.

I grew up in Southeastern Delaware County. It is right up against Southwest Philly. There are still a lot of nice, small and affordable towns in that area, with easy access to the city via car or train. Other public trans. is a little trickier and time-consuming but still doable. Try Glenolden, Norwood, Secane. Pricier but very nice, try Havertown, Wynnewood, Ardmore outside far West Philly (Overbrook Park/Wynnefield area). This is the neighborhood of Saint Joe's, and very close to University City (Penn, Drexel). I'm in the city in Overbrook Park. For Philly, it's a nice, working-class neighborhood. Plenty of parking but lousy public trans. Good luck with school and home-hunting!

I would look for apartments in Ridley Township....its cheaper, nice, and all the towns have a train station to the city. And the drive is only about 10 minutes straight up I-95. Good Luck!
