Where is an affordable but not ghetto place to live in Philly PA?
-
I am considering moving to Philly but I am not familiar with it at all. I would like to live somewhere in Philly that is affordable but not in the ghetto. I will most likely live in an apartment or town home. Any ideas?

Answer:
There are tons of neighborhoods in Philly and each one is unique and has something different to offer. If you're looking for nice, affordable residential area, try Queen Village, Bella Vista, East Falls, Manayunk, Roxborough, the Northeast, and areas near universities. Center City is affordable if you're willing to live somewhere small. I have a townhouse in the northwest for $1,000. Decent apartments in the above neighborhoods start around $700 or $800. Most of the people who answered your question seem to live outside the city and have an inaccurate view of all it has to offer. Don't let them scare you. Philly has its problems like any city, but there is a lot to love too. Good luck!

Hi, Steve, don't move to Philly if you can manage it, it's very expensive, and will gets more expensive with time, and the city itself is not as good a place to settle down as a tourist destination. high crime rate, bad traffic and crowds of tourists, noisy.....the only two things good about the city are friendly local people, you know, people here are always helpful and friendly, another is full of historic attraction. when you move here, you will find the second one a great nuisance, bringing too many tourists here, making the city worse than before. but if you really mean to move here, try Northern Liberties, South Philly and Bella Vista, West Torresdale, South Street, these places may not be perfect, but at least has some affordable apartments, other good places are always too expensive. if you budget is large enough, you could also try Fairmount, Old City, the Art Museum Area, or choose from the northeast. may this could help you.

Philly is a dump but very affordable as a result compared to major east coast cities.(D.C.,Boston,NYC) I live smack in the middle of center city and pay $1,100 for rent. This location in other cities would triple my rent. If you must live here look for apartments in center city, near the gayborhood like around 9th to 13th between locust and south street. or between 21st and locust to 23rd and south, otherwise every other area is ghetto, dirty and crime infested.

If you must be in Philly, and not a surrounding suburb, choose the far northeast section of the city, like Somerton, or Foxchase. Both are convenient to center city for work by public transportation. Both have apartments, and Somerton has quite a few townhouses. Good luck!
