What should I look for in Philadelphia?

I want to move to philadelphia. What areas should i not look at?

  • Answer:

I am not sure what "Mike" is talking about, but Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in the US. Comparing it to the tiny town of Coatesville in Chester County is like comparing a canoe to an aircraft carrier. Within the city limits of Philadelphia rae hundreds of diverse neighborhoods, which contain the whole spectrum from Millionaires to Crack Whores. Philly is a city of neighborhoods. And, it is extremely diverse. There are lots bad neighborhoods right next to good ones, so you have to tae some time visiting the city in person to see what I mean. Look at it at night, things always look a little different when the sun goes down. Most of South Philadelphia, all of the center city neighborhoods, manyaunk, Roxborough and most of the far northeast neighborhoods are good places to live. But, they too have pockets of poverty and problems. A lot depends on what type of neighborhood are you looking for. If you are adverse to a racially and ethnically mixed neighborhood, you will find yourself fairly limited. Large portions of the city are filed with hardworking, midle class people who keep their homes and neighborhoods in dececnt shape. Most crime only effects those who buy and or sell illegal drugs, and their compnaions. Philly also has great, diverse, middle class suburbs and the metropolitan area is blessed withe efficient public transportation. West Chester is pretty far away from the City, but you have places like Ardmore, and jenkintown, and Elkins parks, and Upper Merion and Conshohocken to choose from if you are looking for suburbs. Take my advice as a Philadelphia native, come see for yourself. You won't get the right information either on Yahoo Answers or on-line real estate sites. I have never seen a good representation of the Philly real estate market on line. Philly is a great place to live. It does have some downsides, and it is more exepensive than some other cities. But, I am sure that youc an find something that suits your needs.

Other answers

Stay away from South West Philly. Other than that, its a great city. I live on the suburbs on the outskirts of Philly (Valley Forge, etc) and I love it.

You could also consider the New Jersey suburbs. Don't laugh: the commute to Center City is better from NJ than from any PA suburbs. PATCO, the train run by the bi-state commission DRPA, runs all night. That's more than can be said for access to PA suburbs. If you want to use public, the towns of Collingswood, Westmont, and Haddonfield all have stations. The first two are comparatively affordable. The downside is the cost: driving over the bridges cost $4 a day. A PATCO RT ticket is $4.60. Good luck!

Qcontinuom

Stay away from most of Philly, Coatesville, and Chester. If you have kids, one thing you need to think about is all the drugs in the area. When you think about it (at least where I am, West Chester), we're right in the middle of Baltimore, New York, New Ark, Coatesville, Chester, and Philly. Not only that, but West Chester is considered one of the nicer Philly suburbs.
