Where to live near Philly or Harrisburg?

  • My husband and I are considering a move to PA, and want to find out more about the area. He works as a software developer so his job would probably be in or near Philly or Harrisburg. There aren't any jobs for him in York, Reading or Pittsburg. We like living in suburbs, but he would prefer not to have a long commute. We would also live to buy a house and probably can't afford more than 350k. We would like a safe area and I would like to have malls, outlets, etc. nearby. We've looked a little at Lancaster and like that area but it is too far to commute? We have read good things about Blue Bell but it is a little expensive. Elizabethtown seems like it might be nice for an area near Harrisburg. Any recommendations on areas?

    I'd suggest somewhere near Hbg....Like Camp Hill, Enola and etc...Super close to downtown, yet close to the country too. I lived in Enola for a whole 6 months eons ago, but was just in HBG last weekend. It really is a nice area. And you could definitely find a great house in your range.

What is your price range? Here is a suggestion. Coatsville. It is not the prettiest place yet, but they are quickly building new homes and store out there. So the houses are cheap right now. If you want to be close to Philly, but in Suburbs, you can also try Chester County Region. Exton, Downingtown, King of Prussia. These places are a little bit pricier. The commute from these places are about 35 to 45 minutes to the city. Same for Reading.

There are many large software companies in the western Philadelphia suburbs including Decision One and SCT as well as in the City itself and the homes in this area are beautiful... this is referred to as the 'Main Line'. Houses are not on large lots, but there are many cute downtown areas within walking distance and the train runs through the towns from Paoli to Philadelphia. There is a nice town called Havertown in Haverford Township where homes can be add for 350k and the school district is excellent. Look at Philadelphia's Main Line area if you like historic older homes and defined neighborhoods. If you want a McMansion, go further west or north...Good luck!

philly is becoming the new new york. it truly is the city that never sleeps. it is a great place to live though honestly. wheter you live n the inner city(center city) the great suburbs. or near the international airport (eastwick) the houses can be really reasonable scpecially if ur going up to 350 hope this helps

The cost of living there is very low compared to Philly metro area, mainly because Harrisburg metro is a transportation hub for all the goods being shipped. Lancaster seems to me to be an in between.

I think it`s cheaper in the Harrisburgh area,they also have less drive-bys.The taxes in Philly are murder!Also the gross incompetance of the city .King of Prussia may have Jobs,you could even live in the suburbs,as far as Pottstown and commute, leave early `cause 422 is a nightmare from 7am on. the readingeagle.com or pottsmerc.com may help.
