Where are good areas to live in Philadelphia?

What are some good areas in Philadelphia?

  • I want to move to philadelphia in august because I am planning on transferring to Drexel University, and even though I will live on campus, my mom wants to move out to philly with me, and I do not want my mom to live in a dangerous area I understand that North philly is completely off limits, and so is west philly to an extent But my question is where are some good neighborhoods, that look nice and arent TOO expensive preferably in south philly because I hear that is the best part but the neighborhood does not have to be too bougie because we are from southern california, and have seen some bad areas lol

  • Answer:

We don't do bougie. I barely know what that means. lol We're basically a blue-collar city, but some accounts, lawyers, and doctors live here too. Yeah, South Philly is generally a good area, but we have our pockets of not good. You're from So. Cal? Then finances can't be tough on you. (I hear it cost more to live there then here. Might be wrong.) If you're going for upper middle class - try "Packer Park" (newer homes, and big) or "Girard Estates," older homes, but the nice kind of "older homes." They have twins, verses the standard rowhome. (Rowhome is "townhouse for blue-collar people.") Anywhere in between those two neighborhoods are good too. Now, there's also a nice area around the Italian Market, but you don't want to get too close to the market itself, unless you have no problems with crowds all day and you have no plans to have a car. Get suspicious, if you go north of Washington Ave. A bit dangerous in some places, safe in others, but being new, why take the chance? Lots of places across Broad St. (13th - Front, which is our equivalence to First Street), most good, but stay away in that square mile right around 7th and Snyder. That's already down hill and spreading out wider and wider. Below Oregon, anywhere between 4th and 19th is good. Oh, and general rule of thumb so you do get our miles - every 8 city-blocks is a mile. So If I walk from 16th down to 8th, I walk a mile. Can't remember the name of the place that sold us our house -but they're good. They're on the northwest corner of 16th and Oregon. Mario is Dad and Junior's first name. Oh, and once you move in, get to know a couple of neighbors. We keep an eye on each other's house. They can also teach you about where to go and where not to go at night. Other option, if you're from burbs is to check out Gloucester County amd Camden County (a bit more expensive. Reasonably priced, but you'll need your car. It will be a drive - maybe up to an hour, but most likely 1/2-3/4 hour, except Friday nights during summer - everyone goes to the shore. Truth is we moved in town from there, because we could buy more house for less money.

Well I've been here 40 years & clicking & A Temple Univ. grad. I Live a few mins from Drexel so consider the source. I Know the area & bougie..... 1. Drexel. Great school. Bit of arch a rival in the engineering universe. I run into too many Dragon grads. Campus is Ok, overshadowed by U. of Penn and their snobs. 2. Drexel is in West Philly. Some people think there are magic lines on maps where crime does not occur. Myth. Do you you prefer black drug dealers or white suburban child molesters? Or Drexel LSD dealers for that matter (few weeks ago). Watch Action News long enough & you will find no safe havens. 3. Not too expensive? House or Apt.? Philadelphia is big place & prices varry a lot. You can buy the avg. 2 story rowhome here for under $100,000. Apts.? Most start at $600 a month & go up. So. Where to stick Mommy in a place she will be cool Yet not feel on Mars? Well.... Give me few seconds to think. Wynnefield comes to mind. It's the section over by St. Joseph's Univ. My dad lives over that way. It's a fit. Clark Park over On the edge of Universty City is not far off campus actually. Just avoid the college housing in the area. South Philly? Try South of Snyder Ave. & east of 20th st in general. Not a fan though. Spring Garden & Brewerytown just north of Center City are decent spots to consider.

If your mom is alone, I quite frankly wouldn't want her to live in any of the places so far mentioned. She should consider living farther out, but close to the commuter rail system (SEPTA), where she can hop on a train to 30th St. station, and Drexel is just around the corner. Perhaps Chestnut HIll, Fox Chase, Abington, or any other similar location. She would be a lot safer and get more for her rental dollar.

Dude avoid west Philly, because In west Philadelphia born and raised On the playground is where I spent most of my days Chillin out, maxin, relaxing all cool, And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school When a couple of guys who were up to no good Started making trouble in my neighborhood

No West Philly No North Philly & the majority of Southwest. Avoid those areas. Good areas: Roxborugh East Falls Manyunk, Northwest & parts of Northeast. South Philly is the best. I like the area between Synder & Oregon avenues the best. Don't go to Point Breeze! Center city & university city are good but pricey.
