Planning a trip to Philadelphia area next week from Buffalo. We have Tut, Zoo and Aquarium on list. What else?
-
We are travelling with two boys, 10 years old. We would like to see things in the area and have about 5 days to do it, but doesn't have to all be right in Philadelphia. It can be on the way or past Philadelphia.

Answer:
While at Tut leave time for the rest of the Franklin Institute. Learning is almost too much fun to be true at this festive, hands-on museum. Tut After Dark in the Fels Planetarium from 6-9pm! Tuttleman IMAX Theater Information The Tuttleman IMAX Theater is a Dome theatre that is truly unique in a number of ways. Unlike conventional dome theaters that are 180° encompassing, IMAX Dome screens are also tilted at 30 degrees. The special seating places the audience up in the dome completely involving them in the show. The dome is over 70 feet across and 4.5 stories tall. In addition, 20,000 watts of amplifier power and over 50 speakers will make you feel like you are part of the action. An IMAX Dome theater truly puts you in the center of the action. The Franklin Institute is located at Logan Circle, near the Please Touch Museum and the Academy of Natural Sciences, and not far from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

I was just there 2 weeks ago...we did the Battleship New Jersey (right next to the Aquarium in Camden). It was pretty neat, I think your boys would like it, but there is a lot of stair-climbing and smaller spaces. Just don't go if it's going to be very hot outside. If you go to the aquarium you may want to see if you purchase advanced tickets - when we went there was an hour wait outside and it was very hot. Other things that are good to do (if you haven't done them before): - Ethrel's Alley (the oldest street in America) - Liberty Bell - Betsy Ross Museum I also reccommend getting a good cheesesteak at Pat's or Geno's. There's also a place called the Boxcar Diner which has very good pizza steaks and freshly baked pastries. I would also go to a Rita's - which has water ice and custard, the kids will LOVE it.

Check out the Big Bus Tour or the Duck Boat tour. Both give great overview tours of the city and are fun to do. You should also check out the USS New Jersey. It's on the Delaware River which separates Camden, NJ and Philadelphia, PA. Definitely walk around the historic district containing Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the new Constitution Center, and several small beautiful parks. The Mutter Museum contains some famous medical oddities like a body cast of the original siamese twins and lots of creepy bits in jars. Perfect for 10 year old boys! It's in center city on 22nd Street. Finally, take a look at the city's tourism site:http://www.GoPhila.com You can search by date, venue, age range, etc to find events during your stay. Enjoy!

I always advise people go to Geno's in South Philly and get an authentic Philly Cheesesteak! There's no substitute for the real thing!

This site is all you need. http://www.bigbus.co.uk/ They take you around Philly on a dounle decker bus and the ticket is good for the whole day. You stop at over twenty stops and can hop off the bus and tour. The best part is a new bus comes every twenty minutes so you are never waiting long. The tour guides know a lot of the city and reccomend some great places to see and eat. I took my wife, three year old with my wifes friend and her 1 year old. The kids liked to look out from the top of the bus and I liked resting my feet from all the walking. This is by far the best way to see the city. Just a piece of advice, ride the bus all the way around once without getting off so you can plan what you want to see. Then jump off and on in a more efficent way.

If the boys like baseball you can take them to a Phillies game. They are home next week against the Dodgers and Padres.

When I think of Philadelphia, I think of University of Pennsylvania and History that was made there. Maybe go to Dorny park (this is an amusement park) somewhere on the way.

Lancaster County is PA Dutch Country about 1 - 1&1/2 hour from the city. Lots of shopping and interesting sites. Pennsylvania Rennaissance Fair and Hershey Park are also in that area. This link gives info and directions. http://www.parenfaire.com/
