What do I HAVE to see in Philadelphia?
-
I'll be there for just one day. I'd like to see some of the usual sightseeing stuff and also some cool places that you don't find in books.

I've read the answers & I lived here for about 11 years now ~ to this day, I still think it's neat & never rode it ~ try to do "Ride The Duck" ~ it's a pretty cool tourist bus/boat thing, lol It's a big boat on wheels ~ tours throughout the city, south street, etc. ~ then, goes right over to the Delaware River (River between PA & NJ) & drives right into it, you get a ride in the city & on the river ~~~ REALLY NEAT!!!!! I still have to try it!!! There's many steak places in this city that many Philadelphians have named their favorites ~ Pat's & Geno's are of course the most well known in the city BUT again, there's many more favorite ones, my favorite is Jim Steaks on 4th & South ~ they always tend to have a line around the corner, but that goes for a lot of the most favorite places in the city. As for nightlife ~ Old City Clubs are good, younger rowdier crowds on Delaware Avenue, South Street, & Center City!!!! I would either do a search on those places on the net or catch up wit' a Philadelphian & they'll let ya know on their personal experience!!! I hope I helped & I also hope you have a wonderful time here, it's fun if you find the right stuff to do!!!!

personally, I'd say go to the Art Museum and walk around outside of it. From that vantage point, you'll have a skyline view, the Schukyll River, Boathouse Row, the Rocky Steps, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway with an unobscured view of City Hall (if you're a Rocky fan, this view is incredible considering how much the skyline has changed since the filming) and of course, the Museum itself. Plenty of things are in walking distance from there, including good restaraunts and bars to grab a bite and a beer at. The only downside is that none of the subways run there, so you'd have to take a cab (<$5 from 30th Street Station) or a bus, but I don't know the routes.

Great suggestions have been given. My favorite is the Rodin Museum. If you have one day definitely get a pass to ride the purple tourist bus. You can pretty much see all the sites including the zoo.

If you only have one day... go down town..... you don't need to drive... just walk.... it's the BEST PLACE ever....

If you only have one day, then spend it in the Society Hill area (so named for the Society of Quakers, who founded the city). Aside from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, the entire area is steeped in history, with buildings dating from the 1600 and 1700's. In the various colonial buildings around Independence Square you can read the documents that led up to the Revolution, much more fascinating than what we were taught in schools. Wander down to South Street for funky stores, coffee houses, restaurants, etc. Eat a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich - preferably from Pat's. Contrary to popular humor (What's worse than 1 week in Philadelphia? Answer: Two weeks) there's so much going on in Philadelphia one could easily spend two weeks and still miss out. Along with San Francisco and Montreal, Philadelphia is my favorite city. Good luck.

Go to the Italian Market on 9th St. The best food!

North Philadelphia has many attractions you won't find anywhere else in the United States. You will only find a neighborhood like this in Baghdad or Philly!!!!
