Are there any really great views in Philadelphia?

Academy of Music Philadelphia - Best seats, especially for young children to see?

  • Beauty and the Beast tickets go on sale next week here in Philadelphia and I plan to buy tickets for my daughter's kindergarten graduation. I've taken her to many shows in NYC but never in Philly. I've heard things about columns and limited views at the Academy of Music. I'm worried about sitting in the orchestra/parquet because sometimes my child cannot see over the person in front of her. Any suggestions would be great, I will pay for a good seat because it makes all the difference. Thanks!

  • Answer:

I would suggest Parquet Boxes or Parquet Circle seating, even if they tend to be more expensive. I have sat on every level in the Academy of Music, and the Parquet levels have been my favorite-- even better than floor (Orchestra) seats. The Parquet seats all are raised seating, so you get a better view of the full stage, which is preferable for a theater show moreso than a regular concert. The boxes give you a lot more elbow room and flexibility. Don't do the column seats, but I have found that even the limited view seating is usually ok. I never do limited comfort b/c I'm over 6 ft tall, but it may be okay for you and your daughter. No matter what, STAY OUT OF THE FAMILY CIRCLE AND AMPHITHEATER SEATS. The seats are so far up, you feel disconnected from the performance. Bottom line: Even though the Academy is a historic landmark, it is in despereate need of some functional renovations! Hope my suggestions help and ENJOY THE SHOW!!

Side balcony would probably be okay! Haven't been there in a while but from what I can remember, the orchestra section isn't really sloped, so you'd be taking a chance that a tall person might sit in front of her. I've sat in the highest balcony before and definitly wouldn't recommend it, there are columns obstructing the view of some seats and it would definitely be too high up for your daughter. Hope I helped!
