What's the best neighborhood to live in Philadelphia?
-
My wife and I, young couple, will be moving to Philadelphia next summer. Can some perhaps a local tell us a little more about the city? Which neighborhood should we be looking for? Thank you very much everyone!

Answer:
-I would recommend that you look in the Greater North East (I live in Park-wood), it's on the outskirts of Philadelphia towards Ben Salem county and the Franklin Mills Mall. The neighborhood is very safe and aesthetically pleasing. The homes (mostly row homes) are nice sized and well taken care of. It a great place to raise a family. -If you want the convince of being close to the excitement of Center City and can't afford to live there I would recommend Northern Liberties. The neighborhood is considered up-and-coming but is quite artsy and very convenient (Close to everything). A lot of money is being invested there. However, the homes are not really large. -Some blocks by the Philadelphia Zoo (West Philly-ish) are really nice but some aren't you have to do some research. Literally there is a small pocket of large gorgeous homes. -Areas like Fishtown, Bridesberg, Port Richmond are still in good standing. -Fox Chase and Rockledge are very nice neighborhoods. -Some parts of South Philly are excellent (the home are typically small in this part of Philly) but some parts are crime ridden you have to look carefully. -Avoid Southwest Philly and most of West Philly. They are dangerous. -Avoid all of North Philly (Kensington, Tioga, Somerset, etc.) Its full of crime, prostitutes, drugs, etc. -Avoid Frankford for the problems mentioned above. -The lower North East. The neighborhood use to be nice but has changed dramatically. There are still a lot of neighborhoods that have pro and cons but you have to check carefully. The best time to see where you want to buy would be the summer; that's when you can see the neighborhood's "true colors." Good Luck and Welcome.

Philadelphia is definitely a city of neighborhoods. The "Downtown" section of the city has great neighborhoods, this includes Center City West, Rittenhouse Square, Center City East and Olde City / Society Hill. If you're interested in South Philadelphia I would suggest looking at the Graduate Hospital / Point Breeze and Queen Village areas. In West Philadelphia the University City neighborhood isn't too bad. In the North East i'd check out Brewerytown, Fairmount and Northern Liberties. In the North West you may want to look into Roxborough / Manayunk, East Falls and Chestnut Hill. And, there is always the far Northeast, in which Bustleton, Torresdale, Pennypack and Fox Chase are worthy of looking into. Good Luck

I wish I had a little more info here... like your income level, where you're moving from and the things you guys like to do... I'm from Roxborough (a white, working-class neighborhood in the northern section of the city.) A lot of people think Rox is outside the city but it's not. Over the past dozen years many people from my neighborhood have migrated to Bucks County, Montgomery County and South Jersey because of the rising Philadelphia taxes and cost of living. If you want to live within the city limits and you have money - look into Roxborough/Andorra area. If you decide to investigate further - take a walk through the shopping-areas of Ridge Avenue, ask someone where "The-Crick" is (The Wissahickon Creek) If you like natural beauty, incredible history, escapism and fishing (it's stocked every year with trout and catfish) - you're gonna love the-crick. / Talk to people, get something to eat, stop at a bar and get a drink. - The people will be happy to welcome you and help you. If you are working within the city and you don't mind traveling - look into the Eagleville/Collegeville area. If you like to shop and you don't mind traffic look into the Northeast. Ok - there's a lot more but this should get you started and, lastly, Welcome to Philadelphia!

Try Center City. I don't know any particular neighborhoods that would be completely safe, but Northeast and Southwest Philly are the dangerous areas for crime. Pull out your map and draw a circle around those areas of the city so you can avoid them. See the safest parts of the city are where all the tourists visit, so keep that in mind. If you want to choose a suburb to live in, try one that is at least 12 miles in radius outside the center of the city and you will probably be fine. I live in Norristown, it's completely OK.

your budget would help. I have several friends who live in center city and my one friend has a one bedroom going at 3000 a month. It is a very beautiful apartment with a private elevator that leaves you in her apartment. But budget will help
