Can anyone recommend craft malls in the New England area?

What's a fairly safe, affordable place to live in the Orlando, FL area?

  • My sister is looking to move to the Orlando area with her 10 yr old daughter and teenage son. She's from New England. What she says is drawing her to that area is jobs and cost of living (compared to New England). I'm concerned about the crime rate in Orlando. Can anyone recommend a family-friendly, affordable area?

    First off; please let your sister know that the unemployment rate here in the Orlando area is over 12%. I highly recommend that she not move here unless she has a job first. My daughter and son-in-law recently moved back here; but they both had jobs lined up before moving here. The other reason to look at jobs first is that this area is very spread out. If she knows where she will be working then she can find a decent neighborhood that isn't a long drive from her home and her children's school. There are a few neighborhoods near downtown Orlando that are nice; Delaney Park, Lake Como, the Pershing area, Dover Shores, Baldwin Park, Orwin Park are a few nice ones. The Waterford development in east Orange County is nice. The area around Errol Estates and near Wekiwa in the town of Apopka are nice. Most areas of Winter Park are nice. So is Maitland. Seminole County is nice, it is just north of Orlando and Orange County. Look at Oviedo, Winter Springs, Longwood, Lake Mary, and the north end of Altamonte Springs. Crime here is much like any City. Avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods. Keep your doors locked. Pay attention to your surroundings, and be sure to visit a neighborhood before moving in.

Orlando is rated #6 on Forbes list of Most Dangerous Cities in the US based on violent crime statistics.. not what people would expect of mickey mouse land. Orlando is very multicultural. There are many odd housing situations playing out there. Home buyers must be made aware of the defective, sometimes known as Chinese drywall problems that can cause unbelievable problems and property value loss.. mainly in homes built between 2004-2007. There are many foreclosures with shaky legalities, landlords leaving dwellers in a lurch due to foreclosure, and apartment complexes letting facilities go poorly maintained.

She'll want to live in Seminole county (Orlando is in orange county)..Seinole county is just north of Orlando, it has some of the best schools and lowest crime rates in the state (Our H.S., Oviedo was rated one of the best in teh state and also one of the best in the country as far as SAT scores a few years ago)...all the schools (well 95%) are A rated schools, and like I said, in most spots crime is pretty much nonexistent (we haven't locked our doors in like 10 years). Oviedo, Lake Mary, parts of Winter Springs (Tuscawilla country club is awesome, that's where we live), longwood, and wekiva areas are all nice towns...welcome to Florida. BTW, Orange county also has some nice areas but it can get spotty...seminole has much better demographics...if you know what i mean. ditto what the girl above said about having a job before arriving...unemployment is high here...i know a lot of friends that have lost their jobs since obama took office.

I would ask her if she really wants to move down here im from new england also and i wish i stayed up north the weather down here is always hot and is nothing like new england crime down here also seems alot worse than up north.
