What to do in Orlando?

Anyone here from Orlando or anybody been to Orlando who can tell me what its like ?

  • Hey I am going to Orlando in the summer to work at the Disney park :). I am 18 and have never flown before so obviously this will be my first time to America, so as you can imagine I am sort of nervous but excited too because its like going into the great unkown although I am sure it will be great. Im unsure really what to expect and so thought it would be good if people had some advice on what orlandos like, what entertaining things are around Orlando (besides the disney park) etc. I have been warned that it is going to be hot and I guess it will take time to acclimatise to the heat especially as I come from England were it is hardly ever hot !! So yeah any piece of information anyone has would be appreciated....Thanks

Yes, it will be very hot. My best advice for you is to make sure you use plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated. It will be shocking for your body to be in the heat and sun every day. Don't let the previous posts bother you. Orlando is not a violent ghetto! Yes, there is crime here, just as there is in any city. I'm raising my kids here and would have left long ago if I didn't feel it was safe to do so. Don't miss going to at least one beach while you are here. St Pete and Clearwater are both nice gulf side beaches.

Hey! Congratulations on the cool job! I live in Canada, but my family has a place in Orlando. You will have fun there! Just be careful. The crime can be a bit much, but if you watch yourself you will be just fine. Don't do the crazy stuff and you will be ok. As for what is there to do in Orlando, the answer is a lot!! There is so much to see and do. There is the Universal Studios, and the city walk. There is Downtown Disney where there are tons of stuff to do both day and night. The weather is pretty warm, but you will get used to it real fast. Air conditioning is a real great invention. (ha ha). I am sure there are people on here from Orlando, so they will be able to tell you more. Don't worry about the flying. It is so much fun. I love to fly. It feels like you are sitting in your living room and not moving at all. Have a great time! PS. - I just wanted to add that while you are there, stay close or in the touristy spots. It is the safest places. Don't go right into the city.

You lucky thing. I took my 2 young boys (5 and 3) to Orlando and went to Disney World. What a place. Disney is great and Orlando is great. We stayed in Kissimmee (can't remember how you spell it). The people were really friendly, loved the English! The place was clean and I couldn't get over the trucks - they were spotless - not like our old dirty ones. Even the ones that collected the rubbish were nice and shiny. They didn't drive like idiots over there either, nice and slow - laid back. We went in October and it was hot but bearable as the heat is not the same as in England - it's more moist - not what I call 'headache' weather. You will love it. Loads of shops and the beach is great to. Didn't do much of the night life cos of the boys being so young. You lucky lucky thing. I'm completely jealous. Have a good time, you won't regret it.

Orlando is pretty well surrounded by all kinds of theme parks. Disney, Universal Studios, Sea World, Busch Gardens, Water Something. Then you also have things like the alligator zoo, dinner shows, wax museum etc. Along with standard things like bars and movie theaters. Expect lots of traffic on the main drag at peak travel times for the theme parks and do expect it to be hot and frequently muggy. If you get some time off be sure to go in and check out Tampa on the Gulf or get out to the Atlantic coast. There are lots of things to see and do in Florida and you'll be centrally located to most of them. Maybe when you first get in you should pick up a Florida guide book to help start you off.

I lived in Orlando for years, I have no clue about the ghetto that the other person was talking about. There are 'areas' just as there are anywhere. I miss Orlando and Florida in general. One tip for the heat, buy a drink bottle strap (so you don't warm the bottle with your hands), take a bottle of water (that you've already drank from) and refill it HALF way with water and freeze it. Then the morning you need it, fill it FULL with water the rest of the way. The frozen water will keep the tap water from getting warm and you'd still get a full bottle of water. If you stay in contact, I can tell you about the animals and other things (if you see a scorpion, they are only as bad as a bee sting and always use something on your feet, the red ants sting with something that burns and hurts for a long time and will give a tiny white 'blister'. Not enough space here for everything. I'm sure you'd love it in Florida, but ACCEPT the heat and get use to it. If you fight it, you'll be miserable.

Crime in Orlando did take a spike up. There was a spike in 2006 and it's still pretty high in crime... I think it correlated with inflation/housing jumps.. economy things, but it has been especially high in murders. Tourists have been targeted especially for theft, but it's mostly pocket areas with drug dealing that have the majority of violence problems. The element is here though, so one should be aware of that, especially if they bring young children. It's not a great area in my mind, but it does have a lot to offer, especially to those who are looking for youthful adventure and don't mind not making great pay.
