How to make calls private from UK to the US?

I'm travelling to the USA in the summer, does anyone know how I can make cheap calls to the UK?

  • Unfortunately the villa doesnt have internet access so Skype, MSN etc. arent options. I've heard there are some numbers you can dial before dialing in the UK number that allow you to make cheap calls, so if anybody knows of these it would be a great help

    american phone companies are total rip offs on cell phones you can be charged for receiving calls(air time) and even huge amounts for receiving or opening junk texts , you can buy calling cards with call credit on them that may work out cheaper through access numbers, you can try skype through the numerous wifi hotspots even mcdonalds have them

First, check again regarding Internet. It is very rare for a rental (probably a condo or condominium in USA-speak) to not have Internet access today. If that doesn't work your best option is to buy prepaid calling cards. They are sold everywhere, including the post office. if whoever you want to talk to is willing to do so, you can have them call the phone in your rental using Skype/whatever. You can buy a prepaid cellular phone and receive calls on it also.

The "villa"? ! ? You're planning on being beaten by the locals upon arrival? villa? we don't use that word (use "estate") villa, lol. Check out the fcc site. Then re-post question asking about specific choice. You should know that rates may vary for land-lines and cellular phones so choose carefully. Call a "toll free" number (Prefix 800, 866,etc.) enter your account no and number to dial and it will subtract your time off of what you prepaid (via charge card (credit card)) I just checked and see that per minute rates are as low as 1.9 cents for some companies I've never heard of and more like 5 to 7 for "brand name" companies. If your host or real estate agent is local, it is best to ask which service has the best local coverage. You could also check out prepaid phones and/or plans - depending on how long you're here for,

It is very unusual for any rental not to have internet. but you can find it at many other places. Like McDonald's, Starbucks, Penara Bread. so you should still be able to skype.

I use Parla TeleCommunications (Redstone) 0345 193 2020 phone card it is like making a call; from the U.K. using local UK numbers and very cheap

If you have a cell phone, check with them. Some offer international calling as part of the package or have it as an option that you can use.
