Wages/Jobs in the State of Florida, How do they Stack Up?
-
Wages in the State of Florida... how do they stack up? I'm from Michigan and the job market here is in the pits. More people than not are laid off and/or unemployed and there are no jobs to speak of. I'm planning to move to Florida, and I have had people tell me that the wages there are worse than Michigans and they have no jobs there either... does anyone have any light to shed on this??? Should I chance it and make the move, or stay where I'm at and take a chance something will open up. One thing I have to say... I hate Michigan winters. 1 second ago - 3 days left to answer.

Answer:
"At seven percent, Florida’s unemployment rate is a full half a percent higher than the national average" The cost of living here is likely higher than where you are from. These are times that are getting worse. We don't know your financial and family background. If you have a little money to burn, you can give Florida a whirl. If not, you may be best staying where you are. Florida is a far trip for you. I come from the town of the Walmart stampede. You can just tell that area is on an upswing <eyeroll> We sold the family house while that Walmart was still under construction. I've made some strides in Florida, but I'm unemployed again. To be honest, I won't take just any job, so I can't personally say how bad things are, but it seems that many people are having troubles finding even menial jobs. Once home situations settle, I will expand my search efforts to other parts of the state. When my lease runs out, it's very possible that we'll go to Texas which has been doing better and didn't get the ridiculous housing bubble.

They suck. Fla has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the nation - even Disney has a hiring freeze on. There are NO jobs for anyone, I'm heading to NYC for a few weeks to stay with family and make some money it's so bad here. The state's whole economy is based on tourism; if no one travels, we don't work. Wages are about 20-30% less than the average national wage. For example, if you make $9/hr in a retail store anywhere else in the US, you'll make about $7.50 here. I'm currently making $6.50 an hour UNDER the average ENTRY LEVEL wage for my line of work... and I have 4 years exp. I would not move until the economy's better - getting unemployment down here is hell, I had to wait 6 weeks (and I'm a 3 year resident) and then they only give me $350/month. You can't live on that. If you have ANY job, keep it.
