Orlando Tolls with SunPass?
-
I will be visiting Orlando Theme Parks, like Disney, Universal and Sea World with my family. I will be staying in the Kissimmee area of Orlando. I've been reading that there are some highways with toll passes that will not accept cash. Can someone from Orlando please let me know if I will be driving through one of those? What happens if I don't have the SunPass? And finally, I'm not from the US and I will be renting a car. I don't want to pay the fees for the rent-a-car to let me use their SunPass, can I buy a temporary one to avoid any problems with the tolls?

Answer:
All of the Orlando toll roads allow you to pay cash. There are separate lanes for Sunpass. I only know of one that currently is Sunpass only and that is in Polk County off the Polk Parkway. If you are visiting the attractions you will never be on that road anyways because it is a feeder between Tampa and Orlando for residents in the Lakeland/Winter Haven area for access to I-4 from those cities. If you absolutely for some reason feel you must buy a Sunpass you can do so at any Publix grocery store. https://www.sunpass.com/index As for a cheap or reasonably priced steakhouse in Kissimmee Longhorn is going to be your best bet. http://www.longhornsteakhouse.com/locator_g/default.aspx?P=S&q=33897

There are a couple of toll roads around the area where you are staying. Actually the main highway most people take to and from the airport are toll roads. Those particular ones do have a place to pay in cash. Most car rental companies allow you to sign up for the option to use the SunPass Lanes. You wont have a device or anything in your car. Just use the sunpass lane and all the tolls are collected at the end of your trip. My parents have used this feature a couple of times. IF for some reason your car company does not give you this option what happens is the car company will get the bill from the toll agency and they will then forward it on to you. Either way its not as big of deal as you might suspect. Your not going to get some 100 dollar fine as they say. I live in the area and have on occasion forgotten my sunpass and used the sunpass lane. I called one time and they said the 100 dollar fine they have posted are for the frequent toll runners. There are some commuters who run the tolls on a daily basis for months.
All of the toll roads I'm aware of have both cash and SunPass/EPass lanes. If you don't have a pass, you simply exit on the cash lane and pay. It's a good idea to keep a stock of quarters because most of the smaller tolls are automated for exact change only. I drove the entire length of the biggest North-South toll road TODAY and there were cash lanes all along it at every toll. Simply, you don't need a SunPass and honestly, you don't need to take toll roads at all. I-4 is free and though traffic is bad at times, it's probably the most direct route for tourists and tourist destinations. And as the other answer stated, penalties are for people who repeatedly fail to pay tolls, not a lost tourist.
