Which are the TOP 500 BIGGEST city?

Would $500 a week be enough to live in New York City?

  • I'm thinking about moving to NYC for a year, I'll be paying about $250 a week for rent and I will probably be earning about $500 a week. I was wondering whether $500 will be enough to survive in New York. I don't have a car, so when ever I travel, I will travel on public transport. I'd be staying for no more than a year, I wouldnt be paying for a home phone, I will just have my cell phone, which I would hardly use

  • Answer:

If you live a minimalistic lifestyle, that you will be able to make it. if rent is 250 a week that is around 1,000 for the month and if you are earning $500 a week that is about 2,000 for the month (considering there are about 4weeks in a month) so you will have about 1,000 left over for food, clothing and transportation. If you plan to take mass transit everyday, that is $4.50 per day time 31 which is around $150, leaving you with around $850 for food and everything else So if you budget your money well enough it is certain;y doable

If that $500 is pre tax, It would be very hard to get by. You will probably net $400 or less of which the first $250 pays the rent. Food will eat up about half of wht is left, transportation another $25. Where does that leave you. You are fed and have a place to stay, can get around town and have about $50 discretionary income that is to provide clothing, entertainment and sundries. I guess if you don't mind a Spartan lifestyle it is do-able. Good Luck!!

With only $500 a week and half of it gone in rent you will find it very difficult to make your way in New York. Some tips would be to get a room mate or mates if possible that way your rent and utility bills will come down. Try to cook all your own meals and if you have room in your apartment/house start a little vegie garden, this can be done on your window sill or balcony if you have one. Try to avoid going out but if you do then get online and check out sites like drinkforfree.com and get the best deals and coupons to save you money. Use a prepaid mobile phone to save on a home phone bill. No matter what you do it will be tough but you should get by it just involves a little thought before spending any money. Always think " Do I really need this?" Good luck jamie

Electricity/Gas/Water will be expensive and so is food. You could possibly skimp by without buying any new clothes or buying at thrift stores, not eating out or going out much. You'd be better to try to earn a little more. Generally you want to earn 2/3'rds to 3/4's above your salary to live above the breadline. IE: if your rent is $250 you want to be earning $750 at least otherwise it will be a struggle. Upskill and get a better job or find a way to earn more. Good luck. New York is fun.

If your gross pay is $500 your net will be closer to $400. More than half of that is for rent so that will leave you with $150 a week for food and everything else. $150 a week goes in food but there is entertainment, cell phone, health insurance, miscellaneous household things, clothes, books, transportation, utilities like gas and electric.
