What celebrations happen in New York City on 4th July?

• I will be in New York City for 4th July next year. This will be my first 4th July as im English. I would like to know what usually happens in the city to celebrate. Are there usually parades or shows? Also are the shops open or closed or do they have sales on? Do people dress up to celebrate and if so what do they wear? Are there special places to go like to the Statue of Liberty or anywhere else. I will be alone as i am a university student coming over to live in student accommodation for 3 months so if i make friends with them then we can go out together but what could we do? If i do have to go out alone then is it still a fun atmosphere? I would really appreciate a detailed answer as this is probably the only 4th July i will have the opportunity to celebrate and really want to enjoy it the best i can. Thank you

  never stayed in the city for july 4th so idk really. but here's something i found online: "ACtually there are activities all over the city during the 4th. There are special events at Lincoln Center, there's a huge street fair on Water St and usually concerts in Battery Park. July will be HOT so bring lots of sun screen. Alot of natives leave the city everyweekend to the Jersey Shore or the Hamptons, so Sunday is a really nice day in the city, not as much traffic, and lots of street fairs everywhere. The fireworks display is a MUST SEE, and the best spots are on the east side from 23rd St up to the 60's. The East Side Drive is usually closed and people stand on the drive for a really good view. We usually go to 23rd or 34th St. The view a bit lower from 14th ST is less obstructed and you can see all 3 barges. Before you get to the city pick up a New York Magazine, so you know what is going on and what you want to see. Have a great time in the city."
