Answer:
only one day? thats not enough time... but if you only have a day.. then go to the American museum of Natural History near central park.. then walk across the park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both are free but you should give a little donation.. at dusk you can watch the sunset in central park which is nice... then you guys could take a train to down town and get off in China Town... China Town is within walking distance of SoHo and Little Italy... theres great places to eat in Little Italy and China Town... and theres shopping in SoHo... all of this should be cheap you wouldnt need more then $75 for food and transportation for both of you... have fun

See Central Park, there is a fountain where musicians play. Go to Carngie Hall. Take a boat ride around Manhattan. See the Mets. Metropolitan Museum of Art. Walk around Greenwich Village, see some jazz, find some in Village Voice newspaper. More restaurants than anywhere. Apollo Theater. Off Off Broadway plays. Films that show no where else.

All the tourists like to do the bus tour: http://www.coachusa.com/newyorksightseeing/ Being from Manhattan, I like to visit the Metropolitan Museum of art and then go for dinner and drinks. It's hard to be specific for you as you did not mention any of your interests. Good luck and have fun in the city.

Woohoo...you're in for a super time! Here are some ideas of what you can do while in NYC. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see: Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house. UPPER WEST SIDE: Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West, Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields. MIDTOWN: Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores. St. Patrick's Cathedral Museum of Modern Art Sony Bldg Rockefeller Center Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats! Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington. Empire State Bldg. The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids. CHELSEA: Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun. WALL ST: Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see. Top of Empire State Bldg., Walk in Central Park, walk down 5th Ave., stand in front of NBC for Today show in the morning, ride a subway, See a matinee, Walk up Central Park West, eat a hot dog and a slice of pizza, ride a carriage in Central Park - touristy but fun, if it's too touristy rent a horse and ride in the park, shop at Bloomingdales and Macy's, hang in the East Village or Meat Packing District, Chinatown & Little Italy and plan on going back again.

Go to the wax museum http://www.nycwax.com and take funny pictures with the celebs. They just installed a new exhibit with Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and their new baby. The extra admission price to see the exhibit goes to charity.
