Answer:
You want the many towns that are north of Route 4 just on the other side of the George Washington Bridge, and the further north you go over there, and the closer to the river, the nicer, and wealthier the towns are, like for example, Tenafly, Cresskill, Alpine, Closter, etc. which are close to the city and are very wealthy communities, full of mansions and millionaires. Of course, if you were REALLY well off you'd be asking about private schools, not public, but, if you can afford it, towns like those I mentioned are what you're looking for, or, if you're only kinda well off, not filthy rich, try the east side of Englwood, it's VERY nice and a little bit more affordable, and even closer to New York City, too! Good luck, and the link below is to a map of the area...

Many people seem to be mentioning municipalities that are not "very" close to New York City. The prime location you should be looking at is the northeast corner of Bergen County, NJ. Many of these towns are wealthy, have good educational systems, and are no more than eight minutes driving time from the George Washington Bridge. A list of good towns (no order): Alpine - extremely, extremely weathy, very quiet, good schools Englewood Cliffs - weathly, less quiet, good schools EXCEPT for high school (don't have their own). plan on enrolling either to another local high school, or to a private school. Demarest - small, quiet town, rich again. great schools again. Closter - a little less quiet, and not the wealthiest, but still great. Tenafly - wonderful schools, wealthy as well. very quiet. Cresskill - the richer side of town is very wealthy, and again is quiet. schools are good, but not the best around. Keep in mind these things: 1) if you are not happy with schools, there are so many great private school systems. but still, these schools are great. 2) the richer end of the population tends to live on the east end of these towns. but there are so many exceptions. 3) this is the closest your going to get to the city, with great schools, and wealth! i extremely recommend looking into this area of new jersey. it is definitely what you are looking for. please contact me with any questions.

Montclair, NJ - With two trains, you are back in Manhattan Belleville, NJ - If you drive, drive to Montclair and park all day for free near TD North Bank. Grab the train to Newark then transfer to Manhattan. There is also Maplewood but since it is going further South, it will be a longer commute and it is close to Irvington where a lot of cop shooting happens. Irvington is good for cheap shopping (1/2 the state tax due to Urban Enterprise Zone) but not to live. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:New_Jersey_Urban_Enterprise_Zone If you plan to by instead of rent, make sure you are NOT in a flood zone. That was our bigget mistake years ago and it doubled our mortgage payments when we had to get flood insurance. Steve http://newyorkforum.us

The other answer is good, but if you choose Englewood you will be choosing private schools. Tuition for a 7th grade student at the Dwight Englewood school is $27,000 give or take a few dollars. Towns with decent schools are Demarest, Tenafly (this is a real good one) Englewood Cliffs good elementary not good HS, Leonia, Ft Lee, Creeskill, Closter, Here is a link to a directory of public schools in Bergen County http://www.state.nj.us/cgi-bin/education/directory/directory1.pl Good Luck
