Job in New York City?

Is New York City's population/job growth competitive? Are people who move to the NY metro area happy there?

  • Cities in the southern and western USA (e.g. Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Seattle) are having population and job growths of hundreds of thousands in the past decades, and while New York State and New Jersey have the 1st and 5th highest net outbound domestic migration to other states, respectively, I was wondering if New York City and its metro area is doing anything to bring population and jobs back. Another question, when people move to New York City or its metro area, are they happy there? Please answer my questions with detail. I would also like you to reliably provide where you obtained the information in your answer when answering this question, even if the information is from personal belief. Thank you.

  • Answer:

Speaking as a New Yorker, the last thing that New York City has is a population problem. People may be leaving, but more people keep coming, too. The one thing about New York is that you just have to be prepared for and OK with the high cost of living. The gap between salary and cost of living can be tough, which is why many people who work in New York City do not actually live there, but in the surrounding suburbs. The vast array of public transportation helps facilitate this. There is so much to do in New York, so if you are an active, social person, you will definitely be happy here. I think a lot of people do not anticipate how expensive everything is, though. But in the outer boroughs, like Queens and Brooklyn, cost of living is a little better than it is in Manhattan.
