What is it like to manage a Penn Station?

Train Trip from Poughkeepsie NY to Trenton NJ ; Grand Central and Penn Station Help?

  • I need to plan a train trip from Poughkeepsie NY to Trenton NJ. I see that I need to take a train from Poughkeepsie Train Center to Grand Central Station, and then change over to Penn Station to take the train to Trenton. So Poughkeepsie -> Grand Central ; Penn -> Trenton Is this the best way to go? I can't find anything more direct. Also, I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to get from Grand Central to Penn. If it's around 4PM on a Friday, what are the chances of getting a cab and getting to Penn in under 40 minutes? I've never really done this before.

  • Answer:

You do not mention if you are going to be carrying a whole lot of luggage. If you are then you need a cab. If you don't have a lot of luggage you can walk. It's a little more than a mile and it would take you just over 20 minutes.

You have another option that doesn't require changing train stations. Amtrak stops at Poughkeepsie several times a day. Normally you can't use Amtrak if you're going between Poughkeepsie and New York city, but since you're heading to Trenton they will sell you a ticket. That means that you take Amtrak from Poughkeepsie right into Penn Station, completely avoiding Grand Central. At Penn Station you change trains to an Amtrak train that stops at Trenton. For a list of times when you can use the above option, use Amtrak's website, entering Poughkeepsie at your starting point and Trenton as your destination. http://www.amtrak.com

My friend, instead of going to Grand Central, you can take Amtrak from Poughkeepsie to Penn Station, where a connection can be made to NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor Line. The one way fare on Amtrak will cost you around $40, while the one way fare on NJ Transit from NYC to Trenton will cost you around $20. Good luck

I would say a taxi would be the best way. You could take the 42nd Street Shuttle to the (1), (2) or (3) trains, but it's too much hassle with the bags. And yeah, Amtrak has a few trains going down the West Side of Manhattan that serve Penn Station, and then could could catch NJT to Trenton. I hope this information was very helpful.
