Hm...you're probably better off commuting from Hoboken, NJ (which is just a subway ride away :) Rent is ridiculously high in NYC, depending on whether you're stayin in the city or a bit further away. Jobs are fairly easy to find, if you make connections quickly. Try an agency...they can get you to a certain company, and from there, you can try and move up the scale and speak to different managers.

Well man I went to NY and i was 19 and i went by myself. Man it was fun when i started but as soon as things like bills started to kick in i was depressed because of things being so high but to answer your question, your best bet is to go to Brooklyn and get a apartment there and a hotel, cause all things are high and expensive. And for the job, try and look for something in Manhattan, they do pay allot. Good Luck!

More than you've got, if you don't know anybody there. Seriously...you would struggle to find a $1000/mo nice room. Rent Midnight Cowboy...depressing, somewhat dated, but artistic. Coming to America is much more uplifting, especially if you're the son of a king.

Why NYC? If you really want city life why not go someplace growing w/o cops carrying M-16's? Avoid the State income tax, high cost of living etc. Atlanta GA or Dallas/Fort Worth TX or Nevada. I moved away from the NYC area in 1984, glad I did, everything I've heard tells me it's worse now than ever.

With $5,000 you should be able to put a down payment on two month rent plus a month as security payment. With the rest of the money you'll need to look for a job plus food. But you are going to have to sign a one year lease.

You will need housing first, which will run 3600 right off the bat, and thats for a cheap hole in the wall. Then you will need to find a job that pays enough to afford the 1200 a month rent (for a little hole in the wall) and then you stil need to pay electric and heat, and lets not forget about your 74 dollar a month subway pass. Then you'll probably want ot eat, so add acouple of hundred a month for food. And if you find a job right off the bat that pays 55000 a year you should be just fine.

A few thousand dollars and up. New York is not cheap at all. If you want to find a cheap apartment, try to find apartments in Queens or Brooklyn, which is much less that the rent in Manhattan. It's not easy to find a job here...well.. that depends on what jobs you like. I live in Queens and my life's pretty good here.
